When a wound swells up, turns red and hurts, it may be a sign of inflammation. Inflammation is the body's immune system's response to an irritant, which could be a germ or foreign object. It can also start when a wound has already been infected by bacteria, is oozing pus or healing poorly.
Think of inflammation as the body's natural response to protect itself against harm. There are two types: acute and chronic. Chronic inflammation can occur in response to other unwanted substances in the body, such as cigarette smoke or an excess of fat cells. A simple blood test can measure C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a marker for inflammation, including arterial inflammation. Knowing your cardiovascular risk may help you take more aggressive action to protect your heart. The Harvard researchers found that men with higher CRP levels had three times the risk of heart attack and twice the risk for stroke. If you're young and healthy and at low risk for heart disease, there is no evidence that knowing CRP level is helpful.
