Not going to lie, most people don’t get their first prep “wrong” in one big way. It’s usually a bunch of small things that add up. The most common mistake is starting the cut too late or too aggressively, which leads to either rushing fat loss or burning out halfway through.

Another big one is mismanaging fatigue, training like you’re still in a bulk while calories are dropping, and not adjusting recovery, cardio, or expectations as the prep gets deeper. People also tend to overthink peak week or make last-minute changes that backfire.

If anything, the biggest advantage you can give yourself is consistency and keeping things boring and predictable. The smoother your prep, the better you’ll look on stage.

I've seen too many guys try to get fancy with water manipulation or weird carb loads at the last minute. If you're lean, you're 95% of the way there. Don't ruin a 16-week prep by changing variables 48 hours out. also, most rookies treat posing as an afterthought. If you aren't practicing your transitions and holding your mandatories until you're gasping for air, you’re going to fade under the stage lights.
