^^^ How about you get your definition from an actual dictionary.. I can go on wikipedia right now and change that definition to what I want it to say. And secondly you were looking for a name to call you people that aren't bodybuilders... WEIGHT LIFTERS that is what you guys are WEIGHT LIFTERS

Ok sir I will.

Is it OK if I try Oxford?

I've actually seen a video of Joe Weider saying people who go to the gym to get bigger muscles are bodybuilders. I can't remember the video though.

I said "you guys" because I don't consider myself a bodybuilder or much of a weight lifter (I am a competitive runner just a big fan of bodybuilding). I like that the evidence you use are dictionary definitions because I bet the people that wrote those know a whole lot about the sport of bodybuilding. Everyone has their own opinion on what considers someone a bodybuilder and I feel unless you are competing or plan on competing in the near future (near future= less than 2 years) then you are not a bodybuilder. You are simply a weightlifter who wants to be big or healthy.

Of coarse he would say those people are bodybuilders. Joe Weider is a business man. The more people that think they are bodybuilders then more people will buy his magazine or lifting equipment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodybuilder

Bodybuilding is a form of body modification involving intensive muscle hypertrophy; an individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their appearance. The muscles are revealed through a combination of fat loss, oils, and tanning (or tanning lotions) which combined with lighting make the definition of the muscle group more distinct

Wow according to Wiki I'm a cabinet maker:

Cabinet making is the practice of using various woodworking skills to create cabinets, shelving and furniture.

Of course my friend who is actually a cabinet maker regards me as a guy with a hobby. :borat:

Like I said before. Call yourself whatever you want, just don't think that it fools anyone.

Tim, I actually understand where you are coming from. I wasn't trying to fool anyone.

My point is just that I think bodybuilding should be more "inclusive".

If a bodybuilder is a big, fat in the offseason, smelly protein farting, steroid taking, bloated, synthol injecting, big baggy clothes wearing, selfish, one dimential guy....then I don't want to be called a bodybuilder anyway.

But if a bodybuilder also includes the healthy, clean eating guy who tries to add a bit of muscle through the lifting of weights, then yes I am one.

PS: I think that Tiger Woods was a golfer when he picked up his first golf club at the age of four.

I apologize if Max's feelings are hurt in anyway. I'm sure no one will make fun of you when you step on stage.

If Max gets butt hurt over a few jokes about his physique, he chose the wrong sport. The crowd, judges and fellow competitors are going to rip him apart at his show.

Interesting discussion. Two things that people seem to be forgetting - since when was bodybuilding considered a sport? It's male physique modelling :) and secondly I thought to be considered a Professional Football or Basketball player you had to get paid to play? How many guys who compete as bodybuilders get paid to compete?

The "sport" of bodybuilding is played out in the gym not on a stage. No-one gets paid to train unless of course you have a supp contract.

This is one of those discussions that doesn't have a definitive answer.

Tim you said you're a cabinet maker by wiki's definition but your mate who is a cabinet maker would think you're just a hobbyist. The activity is the same, the difference is one gets paid for it and the other doesn't.

No that isn't the difference. I am getting paid to make stuff. I didn't get paid to play football. But I was much more a footballer than I am a cabinet maker (although in fairness I never claimed to be a footballer, I just played football).

There are many levels of competition, being a professional is just the "elite" level.

I also think if you're going to call yourself a bodybuilder, you have to at least look better than your average gym rat.

Didn't Coleman say something about how he only started bodybuilding when he started doing shows? I think it was in his first video he said this.

Yup, around the 2:54 mark he says it. His first show was in 1990, he says he started bodybuilding in 1989.
