I've been thinking about stepping on stage and joining a bodybuilding competition, but I'm not really sure when to make that move.

For those who have competed before, how did you know you were ready? Did you start with a local show, hire a coach, or spend more time building muscle before signing up?

I'm also curious about the things beginners usually overlook when preparing for their first competition. I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences, mistakes, and any advice you'd give someone who's seriously considering competing for the first time.

Hey mate, my quick advice is to start with a local show and enjoy the experience! First prep can teach you a lot, even if you dont place.

I tried competing before, and one thing I’d tell you is not to rush into picking a show just because you feel motivated right now. Give yourself enough time to see whether you actually enjoy the process of dieting, posing, training while tired, and being very structured with food.

For a first show, I’d definitely start local if you can. It keeps the travel and expenses lower, and you can focus on learning the process instead of making the whole thing bigger than it needs to be.

A coach can help a lot, especially with posing, peak week decisions, and knowing when you’re actually stage ready. Just make sure it’s someone with real contest prep experience and not somebody who automatically throws every beginner on an extreme diet.

The biggest thing beginners underestimate is posing. You can build a good physique and still look average on stage if you can’t present it properly. I’d start practicing early, even months before the show. Record yourself, work on transitions, and get comfortable holding poses when you’re already tired.

Also budget for more than just the entry fee. There’s tanning, federation membership, posing trunks or suit, travel, hotel, food, coaching, photos, and sometimes multiple class fees. It adds up fast.

Personally, I’d pick a show far enough away that you don’t have to crash diet. If you’re already fairly lean, that might be a shorter prep. If you still need a lot of fat loss or more muscle, there’s nothing wrong with spending another offseason building first. Your first competition will be a much better experience if you arrive prepared instead of just trying to survive the prep.
