Which Habit Outside the Gym Has Made the Biggest Difference to Your Progress?

We spend a lot of time discussing what happens during training.

Exercises.

Sets.

Reps.

Volume.

Intensity.

Training frequency.

But when you think about long term progress, the gym only represents a relatively small part of the week.

What happens during all those hours outside the gym can have a massive influence on what eventually happens inside it.

Sleep Is an Obvious One

A lot of people underestimate sleep when they first start training.

You can have a carefully designed program and excellent nutrition, but consistently poor sleep can make everything feel more difficult.

Training performance can suffer.

Motivation can change.

Recovery can become harder.

For some people, simply becoming disciplined about bedtime eventually makes a bigger difference than changing their training program again.

Meal Preparation Can Change Everything

Another habit that seems simple but can completely change consistency is preparing food ahead of time.

When appropriate meals are already available, nutrition requires fewer decisions.

You are not constantly trying to figure out what to eat when you are already hungry.

For people with busy work schedules, this can be the difference between following their nutrition consistently and improvising every day.

Managing Stress Matters Too

Training does not happen separately from the rest of life.

Work pressure, relationships, finances, family responsibilities and dozens of other things can influence how someone feels physically and mentally.

You cannot eliminate every source of stress.

But learning how to manage it can make maintaining a consistent training routine considerably easier.

Sometimes the best improvement someone makes to their fitness lifestyle has nothing to do with changing exercises.

Consistency Might Be the Biggest Habit of All

There is also something to be said for simply becoming the person who shows up.

Not for two weeks.

Not until motivation disappears.

But month after month and year after year.

You eventually realize that an imperfect program followed consistently can accomplish far more than constantly searching for the perfect program and restarting every few weeks.

The same applies to nutrition and recovery.

Small habits become powerful when they are repeated for years.

Everyone Usually Has One

If you have been training for a long time, there is probably one habit outside the gym that you can point to and say:

Once I started doing this consistently, things changed.

Maybe it was going to bed earlier.

Maybe it was preparing meals.

Maybe it was reducing alcohol.

Maybe it was walking more.

Maybe it was organizing your schedule.

Maybe it was managing stress better.

Or maybe it was something completely unexpected.

And more importantly, how long did it take you to realize that habit actually mattered?
