Yeah, this is something I noticed more as I got further into training: more volume isn't automatically better once you're advanced. At that point, exercise quality and recovery matter a lot more than just piling on sets.

This is something I’ve learned the hard way over the years: as you get more experienced, adding sets just because you can often stops being productive. The stronger and more efficient you become at training, the more I think you have to judge volume by performance and recovery rather than chasing a specific number of sets.

I used to think I needed like 20+ sets for everything. Cutting some volume back actually made my workouts better and my lifts started moving again.

The exercise selection part is huge. I can do way more quality sets with cables and machines than I can with heavy compounds without feeling completely cooked.

This makes sense to me. I’ve definitely noticed that copying a more experienced lifter’s routine doesn’t always mean I’m gonna get the same results from it.

Yeah, advanced lifters can get to the point where just adding more sets doesn’t automatically mean more growth. At that stage I think exercise selection, execution and managing fatigue become a lot more important than chasing volume for the sake of it.

The biggest takeaway for me is to watch performance instead of obsessing over a set target. If I'm recovering, getting stronger and measurements are moving in the right direction, I'm probably doing enough. If everything is going backwards, adding another four sets because some chart says I need them probably isn't the answer.

I do 2 sets maybe 3 for a bodypart unless im trying to hit more then 1 angle but i make those 2 sets count. i take 3.5-5 minute brakes. i like this because i could come back tomorrow and do it again or i can wait a week and i still improve.

I think advanced lifters sometimes get too obsessed with chasing volume. If your strength is going down, soreness is always there and motivation is dropping, adding another 5 sets probably isnt the answer 😂 Recovery really becomes a huge part of programming once you've been lifting for years.

The part about copying pro bodybuilder routines is spot on. People see someone doing crazy amounts of volume and assume they just need to work harder, without considering everything else going into that recovery. I'd rather find the amount of work where I can actually progress consistently than see how much punishment I can tolerate.

The part about not just copying advanced lifters’ volume really stood out to me. I’m still pretty new, so sometimes I see someone doing a ton of sets and think I should be doing more too lol.
