What to Watch for at the Olympia Weekend!

We are fast approaching the most-anticipated time of year for bodybuilding fans all around the globe – The Olympia Weekend featuring the Mr. Olympia contest! Whether following the action online or making the trip to Vegas, one thing is certain: The eyes of bodybuilding world will be focused on the Orleans Arena the September 28-29.
For months, fans have been following the action via Twitter and Facebook as athletes turned in their contracts and messages were sent out such as: “PHIL HEATH has just confirmed his attendance to the 2012 Olympia!”
Add to the excitement that the 2012 Expo will be the biggest one ever and the prize money is at a record time and you have a recipe for success. Even better - Team MD will be there covering the action!
It all starts Thursday at noon with the Meet the Olympians Press Conference! IFBB Pro Dennis James will join Team MD’s Bob Cicherillo on stage to host the event. It was just two years ago that Dennis announced his retirement at 2012 press conference. This is always a great chance to hear from the athletes and see what they’re thinking as they head into the biggest weekend of the year.
But that’s not your only chance to hear from the athletes. All the Olympians gather at the Orleans that night for Meet the Olympians. If you’re there in person, this is your chance to meet the athletes in person. If you’re not there, don’t worry. Team MD’s Shawn Ray and Flex Wheeler will be on hand interviewing the athletes for the fans at home.
Friday, the action continues when the 2012 Expo opens the doors to reveal a little bit of something for everyone! With over 500,000 square feet, you’ll see everything from kicking boxing and arm wrestling to power lifting and model searches. Last year there were over 30,000 fans walking around the 750 plus booths, and this year looks to bring more of both!
Of course, the main focus of the weekend will be the contest. Across all the divisions, athletes work year round just to make a qualification to the biggest show of the year. A win at the Olympia is like a win at no other show. By the time Saturday finals are over, bodybuilding history will have been made, as a win here puts you in the history books with names like Arnold, Lee, Dorian, Ronnie, Jay, and more.

Team MD will be there, covering all the events from start to finish. Stay tuned in the weeks ahead as we continue bringing you all the latest from the big show in Vegas.

3x Champ Kevin English Will Not Defend His Title

Kevin English, 3x Olympia 202 Showdown Champion, has formally announced that he will not be competing in the 2012 Olympia 212 Showdown. Citing an injury that has plagued him for years and recently gotten worse, English stated:

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will not be competing in the 2012 Olympia 212 Showdown.

I’ve always had problems with my knees due to years of wrestling. I have no cartilage, just bone on bone. When I was dieting for the New York Pro, my body was often dehydrated and depleted which lessened the cushioning between my joints.

During a leg workout a few weeks after the show, I felt a really sharp pain when squatting. I immediately put the weight down. My training partner and physical therapist, Dr. Michael Camp, was there to provide immediate assistance.

I trained lighter over the next few weeks and the pain was bearable, but still there. The injury eventually progressed into a partial patella tendon tear, so we began the rehab process without giving up on the Olympia.

This weekend, Dr. Camp and I decided that training for the Olympia Showdown was counterproductive to the healing process. I would not be able to do both effectively; therefore, I am talking time off to heal, with the support of my therapist, MetRx, MD, and nutritionist Fakhri Mubarak.

I would like to thank everyone the continued support. I AM NOT RETIRED. We are already looking at shows for 2013. I will still be at the 2012 Olympia, working the Met-Rx booth and excited to see the show and the greatest fans in the world.

English won the Olympia 202 Showdown title the last three years and was among the favorites going in to this year’s competition. The door is now open to crown a new champion…check back to MD for all the breaking OLYMPIA WEEKEND news!

I don't wish him any injury, but it's great that we won't see him on stage.

This is a great news for BBing in general and 212 div particularly!

I think Kevin read writing on the wall and understood that his body had had enough of "supplementation" and was not responding to the same! I personally think we wont see him compete again... not at the O for sure!
