Dorian was just a VERY dense bodybuilder.
His muscles were just incredibly hard and his skin was paper thin most of the time which gave him that grainy look.
These pictures are what launched the modern era of bodybuilding for the past 16 years.
These pics changed the way other bodybuilders looked at themselves and their look. He launched the "mass monster" area with this look.
Some say it was good, others don't.
I thought this was Dorian's best look ever and he was like 4 weeks out !

I personally aint much of a Dorian fan...but his back is out of this world! The front and back poses of him are two different bodybuilders!
