A ferritin blood test measures the amount of ferritin in your blood, which indicates how much iron your body stores. Ferritin is a protein in your cells that stores iron, which is essential for healthy red blood cells, muscles, bones, and organs.

What is this?
Hi @Gymbo , Thank you for asking this. FrenzyMaster here! Just like their replies, Low ferritin levels indicate low iron stores in the body. This can lead to iron deficiency anemia, which is when the body doesn't produce enough red blood cells.

I am curious, how's your diet? If you have a poor diet, it can also lead to low ferritin level.

I hope you are also eating properly :weightlifter:

It's barely out of range.

Eat more beans, dark green veggies or perhaps supplement with some iron and get tested again.

Should go up without much effort.

Not sure what you're taking but 6 months ago I was diagnosed with "severe anemia." I started iron supplements but to be honest I didn't overcome my ferritin, hmg (hemoglobin, sorry), hemo binding globulin, blah blah, until I TRULY did some, shall we say, advanced TRT. The things I'm taking have completely restored my severe anemia. Now, I've got a "really cool" doc and he says my labs are way better than his. Not sure if this helps/answers your question but for me.....Fix them hormones and all else will follow. I would suggest doing other tests to determine if it's some type of absorption issue or something of that nature though. Good luck brother!!

Bro,iron total is good, yes, but IMO still a bit low. Of course I'm not your doc but I'di still say take an iron supp. I actually took 3 a day (65mg elemental) which I think was like 325mg overall which gives you 65mg "elemental" iron. I wouldn't recommend 3 a day long term but I was pretty darn anemic. Something I didn't know was to not take at the same time as an antacid, in my case a PPI ( proton pump inhibitor) such as Omeprazole. Good old Prilosec. I've heard taking with Vitamin C helps also but I don't know from personal experience. Just remember, too much iron is hell on your liver, especially with "TRT."

So as everyone pointed out its seems like a early stages of iron deficiency. To fully assess iron status, a doctor will consider not just ferritin but also serum iron, transferrin saturation, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). When ferritin is low and other markers are still in range that is just an indication that body is pulling from storages before other markers start going down also.

What is the solution to the problem? just take more supplements?

Yes but don’t over due yet. You want to take supplements and red meat and then in 2 weeks get more blood work to make sure the numbers going up in a healthy way.

Definitely ask your doctor about the low ferritin and what that means. I am not a medical doctor and most of the people on here are not medical doctors either. We can give educated guesses about what the issue is but that is all it is; an educated guess. Overdoing iron supplements can be unhealthy; especially for men. Talk to your doctor. You don't have to disclose whether you are taking illegal supps or not (but I would encourage you to never lie to your doctor). Questions I would ask in your place are: What is ferritin and why is it important? What factors can affect ferritin levels? Can exogenous hormone supplementation affect it (you don't have to acknowledge you take them)? Will otc iron supplements help it or will they be detrimental since your actual iron levels seem ok? Are there foods I can eat that could help ferritin levels. What would be the effect of doing nothing about it?

If none of those questions clarify the situation enough for you, ask what the doctor recommends to raise your ferritin levels. Good luck with this.
