A man accused with the deadly home invasion of a S.I. bodybuilder was discovered dead within the Rikers Island housing facility.
STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK — A guy accused in a recent home invasion that led in the shooting murder of a Staten Island man was discovered dead Saturday within a Rikers Island housing complex.
According to a statement published by the city's Department of Jail, Emanuel Sullivan, 20, was found unconscious on his bed at the Robert N. Davoren Center by a corrections officer. At roughly 4:25 p.m., the detainee was declared deceased.
Sullivan was put in the institution in February after prosecutors accused him and two other people in connection with an early morning robbery that went tragic inside a house on what is normally a quiet, residential street in the South Shore community of Greenridge last year. Tamer Shaarawy, 38, was a bodybuilder with children who worked part-time for his family's company.
Kaitlyn Reuter, 35, of New Dorp Beach, was accused of being the "mastermind" behind the scheme.
Sullivan had pleaded not guilty to the allegations and was returned to Rikers Island without bail by a Staten Island court.
According to court records, he was due back in court on June 8.
THE MOMENTS BEFORE HIS DEATH
DOC authorities said that once Sullivan was discovered unresponsive, personnel responded "quickly" to care for him, noting that the housing area was manned at the time and all tours were completed during the day.
The cause of death is still being investigated, awaiting a review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The State Attorney General's Office and the New York City Department of Investigation examine all fatalities in custody.
THIS YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN SIX DEATHS IN CITY JAILS.
This is the sixth time this year that a prisoner has died in DOC custody.
Over the past year and a half, around 22 individuals have died in local cells.
Sullivan's death, according to DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina, "fills our hearts with anguish, as we recognize that everyone entrusted to our care is someone's loved one." At this terrible occasion, our thoughts and warmest sympathy are with his family and loved ones."
An advocacy organization for lowering prison populations in municipal prisons and jails issued a statement on Sunday, beginning with the words "enough is enough."
"We do not need new committees, task forces, or strategies to solve situations that are well documented and fatal," adds the Halt Solitary Campaign's written statement. "We need decarceration action, and we need elected leaders to make choices that keep jailed individuals and staff alive, safe, and well."
