Female Bodybuilding Will Be Extinct Soon

You know that things are bad when only seven people show up to an event that is rare to begin with and one that the same people were fighting for. Such was the case at the recent IFBB Toronto Pro, one of the only shows that still includes female bodybuilding on its schedule. A mere seven competitors signed up to take the stage up in The Great White North with Margie Martin taking him the winner's check.

This does not come as a surprise, however, since there has been less and less competitors at the amateur level. So the lack of pros competing is a trickle up, effect, if you will, as to why there are only a few women who continue to compete in bodybuilding instead of making the switch to physique. WPD line-ups are vast and deep at both the amateur and professional levels; this has unofficially replaced female bodybuilding.

So if there are only a handful of female bodybuilders trying to earn their pro card, the pool is light to begin with. Wings of Strength is basically the only company still promoting female bodybuilding and their championship in September has become the de facto Ms. Olympia. AMI owns the name and according to sources, wanted Wings of Strength to pay $1 million to use it. Not exactly the way to keep the tradition going and needless to say, the offer was not accepted.

Once the Ms. International (Arnold Classic) and Ms. Olympia were shelved, it was merely a matter of time before the competitors began switching to WPD. And thankfully for female bodybuilders, there is an entire industry for them to earn some excellent money with people who actually want to see (and in some cases, touch) them.

So there is and always will be a market for muscular women out there... just not on a stage.

I don't know what happened. Female bodybuilding used to be so huge.

Maybe some of the possible participants were just not ready. I'm sure more females will sign up next year.
