Dropping back one place in a bodybuilding competition – outside of first to second – is not usually a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. But in Dennis Wolf’s case, placing fourth at last night’s Mr. Olympia has many different story lines and none of them are favorable to him.
A year ago, Wolf came into Las Vegas in the type of condition that his fans have been waiting for. He seemed to have put it all together and made a great case for anyone who argued that he should have been Phil Heath’s runner-up, not Kai Greene. But third was still a career best for Wolf at the O and he had some momentum going into the 2014 Arnold Classic.
Wolf did in fact win that prestigious show and it put him right into the Olympia conversation again. Heath was still the favorite but that second place spot was the target of the banter. Wolf needed to best Greene in this Olympia, the 50th anniversary of bodybuilding’s largest event, and perhaps he could have even closed the gap between him and Heath.
But that did not happen. Greene was back in his 2012 form and battled Heath for the Sandow, eventually coming up short. But it was Shawn Rhoden and not Wolf taking third place and Flexatron did so deservedly.
So Wolf is at a crossroads now. Does he go back to Columbus and defend his title, tying Greene with two consecutive? Or does he take the entire calendar off prepping for the 2015 Olympia?
