At 65, Kevin Hall has proven it's never too late to give something new a go. The former football and track coach from Woodsboro, Texas, has competed in his first bodybuilding contest at the West Texas Showdown in Lubbock on October 17th 2026. He came away with three division titles and six top 5 finishes across seven divisions.

As per the World Bodybuilding News report of 23 October, Hall competed in bodybuilding and classic physique, against a field of considerably younger athletes. That performance was a very good start to his bodybuilding career and set him up for his next competitive objectives.

An Impressive First Competition

Kevin Hall's debut is quite the achievement as he's entered a sport which is all about muscle, conditioning, posing, and preparation. Rather than just doing one division, he went head to head in seven at the West Texas Showdown.

His results were three 1st places, one 2nd place, and three more in the top 5. That's a very impressive result, particularly as Hall had never done bodybuilding prior to this contest.

Who is Kevin Hall, the 65-year-old bodybuilder?

Hall is a retired football and track coach, having spent 34 years coaching athletes. Bodybuilding is a new competitive pursuit for him, though athletic development has been very much part of his professional life for a long time.

He also runs the Vault Barn (an indoor pole vault training facility) in Bonnie View, Texas. That's where the focus is on athlete development and helping them get to where they want to be competitively.

Hall's move into bodybuilding is a whole new ball game after all those years of coaching other people. He's 65, and he's competing in the sport for the first time rather than going back into it having done so previously.

Hall competed in seven divisions covering bodybuilding and classic physique. According to the October 23 report, he won the following titles:
  • Bodybuilding Masters 45 and Older
  • Classic Physique Masters 45 and Older
  • Bodybuilding True Novice
The True Novice division had no age limit, so Hall was competing against younger true novices rather than just other competitors in his age group.

He also came 2nd in the Classic Physique Open Heavyweight, 4th in the Bodybuilding Novice Heavyweight, and 4th in the Classic Physique True Novice Open. That's six top-5 finishes across his seven divisions. The report doesn't state what his result was in the one division he didn't finish in.

How Hall Stood Out Against Younger Competitors

Over 60 men from three states competed in the two categories Hall entered. The field ranged in age from 21 to 48, which makes Hall at least 17 years older than the next oldest competitor.

The age gap was absolutely staggering in the Bodybuilding True Novice class, where his competition was aged between 21 and 39.

Despite the age difference, he certainly did win the division. His results show that older guys can definitely be in the game, just as much as the younger guys can. Of course, the outcome for any individual is going to be down to their own preparation, their own experience, their own conditioning, and the standards of the judges in that particular event.

How Bodybuilding Competitions Evaluate Physiques

Bodybuilding and classic physique competitions are judged on divisional criteria which can include muscle mass, symmetry, proportion, conditioning, and stage presentation.

Bodybuilding is all about size and definition; classic physique is about aesthetic balance and having a classic proportioned look.

Competitors will also have to practice posing in order to get their physiques across under stage lights. The published report, however, doesn't contain Hall's individual judge scores or any detailed judge comments, so his results in themselves don't tell us which of the physical attributes were most responsible for his wins.

What Is Masters Bodybuilding?

Masters bodybuilding provides competitive opportunities for older athletes via age groups. The precise eligibility criteria will, of course, vary from competition to competition and according to the organization running the event.

At the West Texas Showdown, Hall took both the Bodybuilding and the Classic Physique Masters (45 and over) divisions. His win in the age-unrestricted True Novice division was another big one, as that division is not restricted to the over-45s.

Hall's next aim is to compete against athletes of a similar age so he can test himself in a more age-appropriate arena.

Kevin Hall's Future Bodybuilding Plans

Hall is looking to enter his first Classic Physique Masters 65-and-Older in the spring of 2027 and is also hoping to get to the NPC Senior Masters 65-and-Older in the fall of 2027 with a view to competing at the state and national levels.

These plans could offer further avenues for assessing his progress as he gains more experience on stage. His debut has certainly been a solid start, but future results will of course be down to his ongoing preparation and his performances in the various events that lie ahead.

A Remarkable Bodybuilding Debut at 65

Kevin Hall's first competition was the West Texas Showdown on October 17th, 2026, and that saw him take three division titles and six top five finishes.

His achievement is all the more impressive in that he was competing against athletes who were many years younger than himself, including in a division which had no age limit. Having spent 34 years coaching athletes, he has now turned his hand to competing himself.

With a view to entering the masters competitions in 2027, he has a number of aims on the horizon. His debut is a welcome reminder that the pursuit of athletic challenge and new ambitions can remain part of life long after the traditional competitive age range has passed.
