Bodybuilding icon Kevin Levrone has reignited debate within the sport by calling for a dramatic increase in IFBB Pro Cards. Levrone, known for his razor-sharp conditioning and fierce battles against legends like Dorian Yates and Flex Wheeler, believes that granting hundreds—even thousands—of Pro Cards will not dilute the sport’s elite status. Instead, he argues, it will fuel competition and growth.

“Give out 300, 400, even 1,000 Pro Cards—the cream is still going to rise to the top,” Levrone insists.

Why Levrone Thinks More Pros is Better

Levrone recalls his own journey from winning Nationals, at the time the pinnacle amateur event, to competing at the Mr. Olympia stage. He argues that more Pro Cards mean more opportunity—but they do not guarantee success. In his view, the true champions will still dominate, no matter how many others earn professional status.

  • Increased participation → More competitors in Pro shows.
  • More storylines → Regional champions stepping up to test themselves against the elite.
  • Bigger events → Deeper lineups drive fan engagement and ticket sales.

Quality Over Quantity at the Olympia

While advocating for more Pro Cards, Levrone stresses that the focus should remain on quality at the top. Only one competitor can claim the Mr. Olympia title each year, and that ultimate victory is unaffected by how many hold Pro status.

“Let’s focus on the quality of athletes winning shows. Pick the cream of the crop from those who step on stage,” he explains.

The Mainstream Expansion of Bodybuilding

Levrone credits the expansion of competitive divisions—Men’s Physique, Classic Physique, Bikini, Wellness—with making bodybuilding more mainstream. This broader appeal has brought in new fans, sponsors, and athletes, expanding the sport’s cultural footprint.

  • Men’s Open remains the flagship division.
  • New categories attract different demographics.
  • Social media exposure turns amateurs into marketable stars before they even turn pro.

Competition Breeds Champions

For Levrone, the idea is simple: the more competition, the better the champion. Larger talent pools force elite athletes to refine every detail—posing, symmetry, conditioning—to remain at the top.

Levrone’s Legacy and Influence

Though he never secured the Sandow Trophy, Levrone’s two Arnold Classic titles, four Olympia runner-up finishes, and career-long dedication make his voice one of the most respected in the industry. His call for more Pro Cards reflects a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes growth, inclusivity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
