Mike Sommerfeld was straight back in the bodybuilding arena after the 2026 Mr. Olympia. Having finished 2nd in Las Vegas the very day prior, he was off to Dalton, Georgia the very next day and took the Pro title at the 2026 Southern Muscle Showdown on October 3rd.
Sommerfeld’s win was another very solid result in an already very successful season. Having contested the world’s best at the Olympia, he showed he could still go head-to-head with a full professional lineup and beat them. That win also provides a bit of impetus for his campaign as he heads into the 2027 Mr. Olympia.
Sommerfeld took the Men’s Classic Physique title, beating out 17 other competitors. The official IFBB Pro League scorecard shows him with three judging points, well ahead of Mahfuz Hawit of Honduras, who scored seven.
Carter took third with 8 points, Patrick fourth on 12.
The result was another solid performance from Sommerfeld after the grueling Olympia weekend. Rather than end his season there, he carried on and picked up another pro title.
Here are the official top 10 results:
Anthony Barbera III 11th, Ricky Intharaphet 12th, Jon Michael Ballard 13th, Mike Stevenson 14th. Vadym Komarnytskyi, Antonio Jesus Rodriguez Garcia, and Jacob Bailey all shared 16th. Andrew Wilson was a non-starter.
The German bodybuilder took second in the Men’s Classic Physique, just missing out on the title to Niall Darwen of Britain. Ramon Rocha Queiroz was third, Wesley Vissers fourth and Terrence Ruffin fifth.
Darwen’s win was his first Classic Physique Olympia title, and Sommerfeld once again proved that he is definitely one of the top guys in the division.
His second-place finish at the Olympia was very much in keeping with his run of runner-up finishes at that event (he’d finished second in 2024 and 2025 as well).
Earlier in March, he won the Arnold Classic UK (another major win for his career). His win in Dalton in October therefore was his second pro win of 2026.
Sommerfeld also took the 2025 Arnold Classic, solidifying his status as one of the top contenders in the Classic Physique division.
His CV is very much that of a competitor who has consistently performed at the top level. He hasn’t won the Classic Physique Olympia yet, but he has on numerous occasions been in the top division, which is very much a testament to his ability to compete against the very best in the world.
Athletes spend months preparing for the Olympia, working on their training, their nutrition, their recovery, and their conditioning. Once the competition’s over, many will take a step back from the stage to recover before they start the next cycle of preparation.
Sommerfeld took a different route and entered Dalton straight after Las Vegas.
Maintaining competitive conditioning from event to event is all about recovery and the continued attention to stage presentation. His Southern Muscle Showdown win was a case in point, proving he could go out and win another event without having to take a long break.
However, the result in itself doesn’t prove he’s improved his Olympia physique. It just proves he’s still competitive and managed to win another title.
Phoebe Hagan took the Women’s Bikini Open, edging out three-time Bikini Olympia champ Ashley Kaltwasser, who finished second. Nivea Campos rounded off the top three.
The Masters division winners included:
One of the benefits of Sommerfeld’s Olympia runner-up finish is that he’s already qualified for the 2027 Mr. Olympia.
This means he doesn’t need any further qualifying wins to secure his place in next year’s event.
Nevertheless, winning the Southern Muscle Showdown is another massive confidence booster as he continues to develop his physique and his competitive presentation.
The bigger question is whether Sommerfeld can eventually turn his consistent Olympia runner-up finishes into a title. With Niall Darwen having taken the 2026 title and a number of other established runners still in the mix, the next Olympia season should be another real test.
