If you're into bodybuilding, physique competition, or the history of the sport, Labor Day in Venice is worth paying attention to.

The Muscle Beach Championship returns to Venice Beach on Monday, September 7, 2026, bringing more than 100 competitors to the famous Muscle Beach Weight Pen. The annual event combines traditional bodybuilding with modern physique divisions, all at one of the most recognizable bodybuilding locations in the world.

Unlike most bodybuilding shows held inside convention centers or theaters, the Muscle Beach Championship takes place outdoors along the Venice Beach Boardwalk. Spectator admission is free, making it possible for anyone visiting Venice to watch the competition.

The 2026 Muscle Beach Championship

The official competition rules list the event for Monday, September 7, at Muscle Beach Venice's Weight Pen, 1800 Oceanfront Walk, Venice, California 90291.

Registration runs from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m., followed by the athlete briefing at 9:30 a.m. Prejudging begins at 10:00 a.m., with the finals scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Competitor entry is $150, with an additional $80 fee for crossover classes. The official entry form also states that competitors can pay cash on the morning of the competition and that there is no late fee.

A Full Lineup of Bodybuilding and Physique Divisions

The Muscle Beach Championship isn't limited to traditional men's bodybuilding.

The 2026 entry form lists Men's Open Bodybuilding, Men's Novice Bodybuilding, Teen's Bodybuilding, Master's Men's Bodybuilding, Classic Physique, Men's Physique, Men's Master's Physique, Bikini, Bikini Masters, Figure, Figure Masters, Wellness, Fit Model, Angel Bikini, Vintage Swimsuit and Couples/Mixed Pairs.

Recent local coverage confirms that the show welcomes competitors ranging from beginners and novices to seasoned professionals. That makes the competition somewhat different from events focused exclusively on elite-level bodybuilding.

For fans, that variety is part of the appeal. You can watch traditional bodybuilding alongside Classic Physique, Men's Physique, Bikini, Wellness, and other modern categories on the same outdoor stage.

Joe Wheatley and 25 Years of Muscle Beach

Joe Wheatley, in a white shirt, poses next to a gym, marking 25 years of Muscle Beach's legacy.

One of the biggest reasons the Muscle Beach Championship is still around is promoter Joe Wheatley.

Wheatley took over the promotion in 2000 when the event had reportedly fallen to only eight competitors. He was hoping for 60 athletes at his first show. Instead, 63 showed up.

Twenty-five years later, Wheatley is still running the Labor Day championship. During his tenure, he expanded Muscle Beach beyond traditional bodybuilding by introducing categories such as Figure, Bikini, Men's Physique, Wellness, Classic Physique, Vintage Swimsuit and Couples.

His long involvement is a major reason the competition has retained its identity while adapting to the changing bodybuilding landscape.

Muscle Beach Is Still the Main Attraction

The competition would not have the same impact if it were held somewhere else.

Muscle Beach Venice has been part of bodybuilding and fitness culture for generations. The outdoor Weight Pen became famous as a public training destination and has remained closely associated with the sport's history.

The Muscle Beach Hall of Fame, created by Joe Wheatley and his late wife Christine, includes bodybuilding legends such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, Frank Zane, Dave Draper, Bill Pearl, and many other major figures from the sport.

That history gives the September 7 competition something most bodybuilding shows simply cannot reproduce.

A Serious Competition With a Boardwalk Atmosphere

Don't let the beach setting fool you into thinking this is just a casual fitness exhibition.

Wheatley recently told the Santa Monica Sun that the show will feature well over 100 competitors. He also emphasized that he protects the integrity of the competition and can refuse competitors who don't meet his standards.

At the same time, the event maintains the unusual atmosphere that makes Muscle Beach different. Bodybuilders compete just steps from the Pacific while tourists, fitness fans and Venice Beach crowds watch from the surrounding boardwalk.

That's an experience you simply don't get at a typical indoor bodybuilding show.

What Spectators Need to Know

A diverse crowd of spectators gathered outside a fitness center, engaging in conversation and observing the activities inside.

If you're attending as a fan, the important details are straightforward.

The competition takes place Monday, September 7, at Muscle Beach Venice.

Registration: 7:00–9:30 a.m.

Athlete briefing: 9:30 a.m.

Prejudging: 10:00 a.m.

Finals: 1:00 p.m.

Spectator admission: Free

Location: Muscle Beach Venice Weight Pen, 1800 Oceanfront Walk, Venice, CA 90291.

The official competition information also prohibits unauthorized professional photography, video, and special projects at the event.

Why This Year's Show Matters

The 2026 Muscle Beach Championship isn't trying to compete with the Olympia or replace the major bodybuilding events on the calendar.

It doesn't need to.

Its appeal is the combination of legitimate competition, a wide range of divisions, and one of the most historically important locations in bodybuilding.

After 25 years under Joe Wheatley's promotion, the event has survived while the sport itself has changed dramatically. Traditional bodybuilding remains part of the show, but today's competitors can also compete in Classic Physique, Men's Physique, Bikini, Wellness, Figure, Fit Model, and other categories.

Seeing a show like this at Muscle Beach has gotta be a pretty cool reminder of how deep the bodybuilding culture runs there. I’ve always liked the mix of serious competitors and that old-school outdoor gym atmosphere.
