ST-PIERRE LOOKING SHARP IN TRAINING

MMAWeekly.com was on location to observe a traditional Friday sparring session at the Tri-Star gym in Montreal, Canada. On hand were Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, Denis Kang, Patrick Cote, Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, David Pariseau, Jacob MacDonald, Steve Claveau and more.

Coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Van Arsdale were also there to supervise the proceedings. From an on-lookers vantage point, it seemed clear that Jackson is St-Pierre’s closest advisor these days.

The initial pairings as directed by Coach Jackson included Evans versus St-Pierre and Loiseau versus Kang. The fighters began by working mainly their striking and occasionally shooting in for a takedown attempt. Every five minutes they would take a short rest and find a new partner for the next round.

Of note, not one fighter (including Evans) was able to take down St-Pierre and it definitely wasn’t because of a lack of effort. On the other hand, it looked as though St-Pierre took everyone down almost at will with probably a 95% success ratio.

St-Pierre’s standup also looked crisp. Although he doesn't throw a lot of combinations, the strikes he does throw land clean and often. Perhaps one minor note of criticism is that his feet are not always grounded thus reducing the amount of weight behind his strikes.

There was also some speculation around the gym, although St-Pierre did not confirm this, that he had actually been anticipating the possibility of Serra pulling out of the fight and thus had been going through his regular intensive training rituals for 12 weeks leading up to the fight. This is interesting because his Dec. 29 opponent, Matt Hughes has repeatedly stated that one of the factors he chose to take the fight was that because he felt St-Pierre may not have had sufficient time to prepare. If what St-Pierre’s teammates are saying is true, Hughes may be in for a bit of a surprise.

yup he did, which hes been flaunting...what he convientiently forgets to mention is that he got stripped of the belt after that fight cause he was on roids

My favorite Highlight of Josh is him eating the biggest straight rights from Pedro Rizzo.. took his head off. One of the most devastating KO's I've ever seen.

CC I believe Josh is definitely top 5 in the world.. he's not very likable..(bit like Tim) but he's very well rounded and intelligent.
Doesn't look like we'll see him in the fighting in the UFC anyway.

^While that is true, i still dont want to see Barnett in the UFC. Simple fact of the matter is that he was taking steroids, he can talk and avoid the issue as much as he wants, but it doesnt change the facts. He got caught, got in trouble and ran to Japan. I don't want to see some guy who could be on roids (he may not be anymore, but he hasnt really done anything to clear himself; ala. Sean Sherk) fight for any title against a natural athelte. Anyone can say what they want, but the end result is that it's an unfair advantage, and it's unfair to the fighter that would be fighting him. If he wants to prove he's no longer juicing, more power to him and id love to see an athelte of his calibur in the UFC; but till that point, sorry to say, Barnett can go fuck himself.

I just watched the UFC 79 weigh ins, and fuckin hell, everyone looks like their in shape. Liddell didnt even have much of (or pretty much any) gut, Hughes came in looking good, Silva and St. Pierre both seemed amped as fuck for their fights; Silva especially. After watching those weigh-ins the picks i had in mind just flew out the window. To me it looks like both of these fights are gonna be pretty evenly matched (barring some major ownage) I am so fucking pumped for this card

If fedor is indeed a pussy, then why is it that ITS the UFC that refuses for cross promotion fights with fedor.

Bottom line, he disliked their terms, and wasnt willing to sell his soul to fight the best in the world. Dammit, hes earned that.
