Durban bodybuilder dies tragically after attempting 'signature backflip' - A junior world champion bodybuilder from Umlazi, south of Durban, who had "a bright future ahead of him", died a tragic death during a bodybuilding event in his hometown, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
Sifiso Lungelo Thabethe, 23, died on arrival in hospital on Saturday, August 5, after falling during the event at a community hall in D section, Umlazi.
In a video taken at the event, Thabethe can be seen flexing his muscles while the announcer tells the crowd about his achievements.

Sifiso Lungelo Thabete attempted his "signature back flip" at the start of a competition but lost control in mid-air, landing on his neck. Dressed only in a black Speedo and socks, he walks on stage and attempts to do what looks like a backward somersault, while the crowd cheers him on. The deceased young bodybuilder was a promising athlete as he won the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Junior World Championship in the up-to 75kg category according to media reports. The severity of what has just happened only dawns on the men as all efforts to assist the bodybuilder lead to nothing. The incident took place this past Saturday during a local bodybuilding event in Thabethe's hometown of Emlazi. The bodybuilding world is also still reeling from the shock at the news of the death of IFBB Western Province official and former Ladies Bikini competitor Michelle O' Shea in a tragic auto accident last week. "We suspect because he was wearing socks this time, that he slipped or didn't get enough momentum and landed horribly on his head", he said. Thabete - who hailed from South Africa - had been playing to the crowd before a contest over the weekend.
