Russian bodybuilders are facing significant challenges in participating in international competitions due to visa denials. At the 2025 IFBB European Championship in Santa Susanna, Spain, only about 10% of the Russian national team—approximately 20 out of 200 athletes—were able to attend. The majority were denied entry visas by the Spanish Embassy, despite official invitations from the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) and support letters from the Mayor of Santa Susanna and the Russian Ministry of Sports .
This situation is not isolated. Russian athletes have previously encountered similar issues. For instance, bodybuilder Vitaliy Ugolnikov, known as "Good Vito," had to postpone his professional debut due to visa problems . Additionally, CrossFit athlete Roman Khrennikov was denied a U.S. visa multiple times, preventing his participation in the CrossFit Games .
These visa denials are part of a broader trend affecting athletes from countries with strained diplomatic relations. While international sports federations like the IFBB can provide support through official invitations, they have limited influence over national immigration policies. As a result, athletes often find themselves caught in geopolitical crossfires, hindering their ability to compete on the global stage.
