“…If you wish to live even a modestly human life, and wish to broaden, deepen, elevate it and make it ever more intense—not only for the sake of the common good but even for your own happiness—then acquaint yourself with books, with as many of them as possible; acquire knowledge…” wrote the great connoisseur of books, Nikolai Rubakin (Among Books, Moscow: Nauka, 1911, vol. 1, pp. 1, 6, 7, 12).
Even if books are artistically perfect, they do not exist for me if… I cannot accept half-truth, a third of the truth, all that conditional truth.
In my view, true reading is a judgment upon oneself, and not everyone can endure it. Books of this kind pass through me painfully slowly and keenly—and do not merely pass through, but penetrate into the depths of my “self.”
With stern, merciless precision they draw for me my true portrait, my true feelings, the picture of my time and society.
I set a book aside after only a few pages—they fill the entire volume of my thoughts and feelings; mind and flesh can absorb no more. Sometimes I can take in only a few lines over several days.
And then I read again—not read, but nail myself to the board.
For me, reading is always a trial of myself…
Anyone can read a book—but will they truly read it?
A book does not open itself to everyone. To read and to rise to the level of the ideas and feelings contained in it are entirely different things. One must be prepared for reading—prepared by upbringing, education, and culture.
In Rubakin’s attitude toward the book and the word in general there is everything I feel. Above all—love for the creation of a new reality by the book, with the book and through the book. All my life I have lived among books; I owe them everything and wish to speak to them with tenderness and gratitude.
When I am given an interesting book I did not know before, and it proves to be above me, I experience a powerful and luminous surge of feeling.
Can it really be that this book is mine?! That it will always lie open before me?!
“…History too is made by people, and an active personality cannot fail to have significance in it,” (Rubakin quoting Georgi Plekhanov — Y. V.). The riches of books are also created by people, exist for people, and are judged by people. Each individual book and all of them together—all the book treasures of humanity, all literature in the broadest sense of the word. From this we must first understand and remember that just as the Sabbath exists for man and not the other way round, so the book also exists for man…
Love for a book for the book’s own sake should not exist. One may love a book only insofar as one loves the human being—an individual personality and humanity as a whole. Pitiable are those book-lovers, bibliophiles, book-devourers who, forgetting the human being, love the book for itself, forgetting that the living force of human thought and feeling crystallized in it manifests as power only when it enters a human being once again…

…One should not forget that a human being can feel far more than tens or hundreds of thousands of pages. Books are needed not only to teach and educate us or to give joy, but also to sharpen and reveal within us what nature has bestowed and what languishes, yearning for life. People are real, not the book. Not you, book, but you, human being, are higher and better than the book; not always, perhaps, but you bear within yourself the power of transformation—you can always become a new meaning, a flight of new feelings…”.(Yuri Vlasov. The Justice of Strength).

In sports there have long been supporters of limits: they claim that records will not keep growing endlessly. Maybe that is so, but I propose a toast to those who believe in the boundless possibilities of the human being. Let us hope that a person is capable of lifting even the globe itself!

“Life is an unexpected thing. I understood this only in my later years. An awkward and ungainly man, I do not know a single day of rest, I grow very tired, and I cannot even hope to publish a book. It costs a great deal of money — and where could I get it?

Yet I go on writing and writing, rejoicing at every page…
It is exactly so: a book is born only when it keeps sounding within you all the time.
‘…NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU BELIEVED IN, and then it will remain in your works, and you will betray nothing. Work is your only future (…) But you worked conscientiously, and as long as you can write, you have nothing to fear.’”
— Ernest Hemingway (Collected Works: The Garden of Eden, Moscow, 2000, vol. 5, pp. 541, 573; emphasis mine — Yu. V.)
“Even if I did not manage to create something truly ‘real,’ though that was always my aim. Still, life — life was always filled with meaning!
How can one accept that it is so miserably and mercilessly short…
A faint hope still glimmers that I may see my manuscripts become books, but it is only a weak little flame.
Could it be that everything was in vain… It turns out I lived two or three lives for nothing…”

— Yuri Vlasov, “The Great Redistribution”

“Everywhere and in everything — a passion for profit, nothing but money and money. An empty, cold world. From souls everything has been eradicated; above all and for the sake of all stands only one thing: to make money, to rake in money, to grab and grab… Everything in the name of enrichment. Humanity: instead of people — paper monetary symbols…”
— Yuri Vlasov, The Great Redistribution

“I am convinced of the great physical and spiritual resilience of a well-trained and hardened person. I am convinced that the working lifespan can be significantly extended for all who use sport and physical culture wisely. And I believe that old age, as we understand it, cannot exist for such people. Age leaves its marks on them too, but this usually does not turn into frailty.”
— Yuri Vlasov, A Confluence of Complex Circumstances

“I began to understand: the main thing is to believe. One must believe unwaveringly in the righteousness and healing power of what one creates. Not to doubt oneself or the results of one’s work even in the slightest. Even the tiniest trace of falseness, irony, or doubt will nullify any effort. The organism is attuned to every smallest movement of thought.”
— Yuri Vlasov, A Confluence of Complex Circumstances

“The trembling in my hands had almost disappeared, and the cough was gone, though during workouts it would suddenly rise from somewhere deep in my chest, and the wheezing still remained — at times it kept me from falling asleep. The nightly fevers had also noticeably dulled their force. I no longer lost as much weight as before and no longer rose as if drunk from the shaking and roaring in my head. My gums stopped bleeding and festering as well. Yet the dreams were still heavy. In dreams I was still the one who had driven himself to dying. The dreams were vivid and tomb-joyless. That meant conviction had not yet penetrated into the depths of consciousness, and the psychotherapy of self-suggestion rebounded like a ricochet.

I gave myself my word to regain the ability to lift weights, at least the most moderate ones. This necessity was dictated by everyday life. I had to restore the simplest ability so as to help my loved ones and not depend on their help.”
— Yuri Vlasov, A Confluence of Complex Circumstances

“In 1959 I won the champion’s gold medal at the II Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, and a few months later in Warsaw I claimed the world champion title already in competition against American athletes. This title came to me in a stubborn five-hour duel with James Bradford and Dave Ashman. I recovered from that contest for several months and even thought of leaving sport. Why all this strain when I was a military engineer, young, and life was so tempting…

At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome I faced Americans James Bradford and Norbert Schemansky.
The battle lasted from nine in the evening until nearly four in the morning. Already in the snatch I left the Americans behind, and they fought each other for the silver medal. I managed to overcome the 200-kilogram barrier in the clean and jerk.
When I lowered the record weight onto the platform, a storm of stomping, whistling, and roaring crashed down on me! The crowd swept aside the police. Thousands of hands stretched toward me. People sang and embraced. The next morning all newspapers came out with my name and photographs of moments from the struggle for the Olympic gold medal. I could not step beyond the fence of the Olympic Village. If I wanted to cross the street, it was blocked off, and I crossed under the welcoming roar of sirens. Thousands of people bowed to me in the street. It was joyful and pleasant. For a long time fans were shown the room where I lived during the Olympic Games. That year I was named the world’s number-one athlete. Correspondents from many countries came to Moscow to interview me.”

"Once, after two days of roaming, Pum barely hobbled back with a steel shard of a pitchfork stuck in his thigh and a frayed rope noose around his neck. He slept without waking for two weeks. He ate his fill. And then, limping, he set off again on his risky wanderings.
Among the village boys, Pum enjoyed boundless popularity. When I led the dog on a leash, those loud little rascals didn’t notice me at all, yet every single one unfailingly greeted Pum".(Yuri Vlasov. “Pum”).

"A few remarks on upbringing.

I am convinced that when a child, a teenager, a young person is made the idol of the family, it corrupts him, turns him into an egoist, a narcissist. This is already dangerous: the child gets the best piece, the best bed, the best place in front of the TV… — he gets used to it: everything around exists only for him.
It seems to me that from the very first days a child should be taught that one must not build one’s life at the expense of others. This would largely eliminate a family evil and the bitter bewilderment: how from boundless love rudeness and callousness grow. And indeed, how? The answer is always the same and, in my view, unequivocal — from the element of unorganized feelings, from boundless love. One must ensure that a child does not greedily clutch a piece of cake, ice cream, or a pear to his chest, but, overcoming the instinct of selfishness, offers it to his father, mother, brother, or sister. And it is necessary that the relatives certainly accept such a gift; this immediately raises the child to a qualitatively new level, revealing the soul within him".

Yuri Vlasov — The Price of Life

"I husbanded my strength in anticipation of competitions. I knew my muscles — they were rare in their responsiveness and quick recovery under strain. What destroyed strength was nervous exhaustion. Even so, I learned to master myself, having known breakdowns and delusions. What I had lived through did not diminish my faith — I learned not to attach importance to the contortions of fatigue and failure. Imagination and instincts were disciplined by experience.

Rivals no longer stirred former hostility. What repelled me was only the coarseness and narrow-mindedness of some of them, as well as greed and indiscrimination in the pursuit of glory.
Persistent and tenacious is the preaching of a special champion’s code — “know your worth.” In it there is so much of the cretinism of blunt brute force, of the supposed right of ignorance to superiority in general!
Big-time sport distorts the nature of a person’s relationship with society. On both sides there is much injustice — and as a result the athlete far too often loses himself".

Yuri Vlasov — The Justice of Strength

“Catch up with time! Seize this time! Win it back through frenzied labor! Find yourself again! Drown the memory of the past in work, heal yourself from the past, renounce the past. Find yourself. Overturn the vulgar truth of that supposed uniqueness in ‘iron.’ Another life lives, struggles, suffers — a vast life. Within it all other narrow meanings sink and disappear. Serve this greater meaning.
Withdraw so far into yourself with a steadfast dream

That the present scatters like dust…”.Yuri Vlasov — The Justice of Strength

On May 17, the newspaper L’Équipe wrote:

“Vlasov, the strongman of all times, wants to astonish Paris!.. This high-performing athlete intends to total 560 kg. Parisians have the privilege of enjoying this spectacle.”
I want to astonish Paris? I promise to total 560 kg?.. Well done, Jean Dame!..
On May 18, L’Équipe
“Vlasov is in Paris! He has injuries to his spine and neck, yet he has decided to attack the record tomorrow…”
And so it went in almost all the newspapers, including the most prominent ones. Among them was a report by sports columnist Albert Dahan:
“Today Vlasov told President Jean Dame: ‘I will give my answer as to whether I can compete after training at the National Institute of Sport.’ During training in the weightlifting hall, he was surrounded by experts and the curious alike. How impressive he is when bare-chested! From head to toe — an athlete! At a bodyweight of 123 kg — not a trace of fat; 48 cm — the circumference of his relaxed forearm. Exceptionally flexible… And at the same time, his warm-up showed nothing unusual. Despite his injuries, he pushed 180 kg. While lifting, he avoids grimaces…”

Yes, during the warm-up I promised Dame to “shake up” the record. The muscular tensions passed without that binding pain. Insomnia and the injuries had not yet taken their toll. Yuri Vlasov — The Justice of Strength

¿Yo quiero sorprender a París? ¿Prometo levantar un total de 560 kg?.. ¡Vaya, Jean Dame!..

“Weakness — it is fear, born of fear.”

I continue to find new signs for my main formula. I must complete it. I have been assembling it over these past years. It came from within me. Suddenly I felt the need for words that would be more steadfast than fear, profit, or violence — words that would not allow me to turn away from my goal and would define my steps with certainty.
This happened when I unexpectedly realized that I am made entirely of other people’s words, that all of us are nine-tenths shaped by imposed rules — rules that are too often alien to us, contrary to our very nature.

— Yuri Vlasov, Stuzha
“La debilidad — es miedo, nacido del miedo.”

Sigo encontrando nuevos signos para mi fórmula principal. Debo completarla.

“The major illnesses are acquired as a result of psychological and moral suffering. Physical exercise will not weaken them. What is important is to eliminate the cause of mental dissatisfaction. At the very least, one must become aware of the cause in order to protect the body from inevitable destruction, often tragic because it is irreversible.

A constricted mind is already the precondition for many diseases. Physical hygiene, in this case, justifies itself only in a limited way, acting merely as a distraction. All this must be understood in the interest of preserving one’s health.”
— Yuri Vlasov, Justice of Strength
