“The driver switched on the radio. In the music Andrei recognized with excitement his favorite ballade «As-dur» by Frédéric Chopin. And life suddenly seemed false. Cruel and limited by dull, animal concerns: from morning till night only muscles, only training, only massages.

That was why he sometimes felt the urge to leave the platform—and then he felt… deeply unhappy.
And after several months he already suffered deeply without the familiar roar of the hall, the salty jokes and rough merriment of his comrades. And without that short pause between attempts, when they laughed at the emptiest joke and slapped each other on their tight, hot backs. They were united by anger whenever someone from outside would not walk around but dared to step over the barbell on the platform. For the place where the bar in a swift effort pressed against the throat, scraped the skin from the neck with its knurling, rubbed the chest and hardened the hands with calluses—that place was sacred for an athlete.
And he agreed with the boastful assertion that weightlifting was the most difficult and the most manly of the classical sports:
“Boxing, wrestling? Ha! Opponents are always different! Even the strongest has some vulnerable spot. Besides, you can outwit, outplay. There are always tricks in reserve. But our ‘iron’ is always iron. If the barbell carries 240 kilograms, be sure—it is always 240! No dodging. Your opponent is always the strongest possible.
Ha, they hit hard in boxing?! And is more than two hundred kilograms on your chest a heavenly pleasure? We all carry its marks. I don’t remember a single lucky man without them. Hockey? But we are always one on one. No one will correct you or cover for you. A huge hall, almost always ‘limit iron’—and you. Handle it as you can. Your mistake means certain defeat. Weakness or fear means defeat as well…”
“And no words,” Andrei thought, “no plastic beauty and perfection of all the arts can express the torment of overcoming: the crack of ligaments, the rasp of breathing, the unsteady steps under the ultimate weight, the roar of blood in the ears, and the widening bright spot before the eyes—your victory, or your bitterness in the triumph of your rival…”

(Yury Vlasov, “Prove That You Are a Man”)

No recuerdo a ningún afortunado. ¿Hockey?

“So that no new pain can enter, I clearly and distinctly repeat:

‘Even if I am capable of losing control over myself, even then I will not say: I am defeated! I will never agree to anyone’s power over me.’
A new pain suffocates me. Why am I inventing a new trial? A record? Why? Run, throw everything away!..
I stand as if on the platform before a record attempt. My arms are relaxed. My feet are exactly shoulder-width apart. Balance in every joint. Enormous lives are in my muscles.
A whisper burns my lips:
‘No one has power over me! The muscles may lose, but I—never! I will not surrender myself! I will not yield!’
A broken, greedy whisper…”

(Yury Vlasov, “Salty Joys”)

¡No me entregaré! ¡No cederé!”
Un susurro entrecortado y ávido…»

(Yury Vlasov, «Alegrías saladas»)

........................................................................

“On the ninth day I began to master climbing stairs, step by step…

Everything would have been fine, but this whole exercise (precisely exercise) took place with a temperature above thirty-eight degrees Celsius. I owed my life only to my heart—it kept pulling me forward. It hurt terribly, I was suffocating, but it kept pulling me on.
In an acute form this suffocation remained for about half a year—I could not eat, brush my teeth; I had to strain and gulp air through my mouth… (whether it was a tear from the surgery and all the pain, or from the anesthesia, or a complication from that “typhoid-like” flu—God knows).
And still I trained.
By the way, thanks to walking, the accumulation of fluid broke outward. It had formed because the operation had been done “dirty” (this was the conclusion of Dr. Baumgartl—exactly “dirty”). That was what drove the fever. The stitches cut into the skin when I walked, and the liquid found its way out. For two weeks I poured it out abundantly. By morning the blanket and the mattress were soaked through… And the fever, the fever—during the night Natasha changed up to five shirts for me.
From that day the temperature slowly began to fall to thirty-eight, then to thirty-seven, until a newcomer was placed in the ward… with the flu. Some high officials were expected to inspect the department. The ward was scrubbed and washed, and the patients and new arrivals were arranged according to a certain scheme—more scientific-looking and more presentable.
I could never have imagined that influenza could have such power. Exhausted by two weeks of waiting for the operation (sleep and life only under pantopon), then by the operation itself and the accumulation of fluid afterward (temperature never below thirty-eight and a half degrees), the body had lost its defenses.
The flu resembled typhus rather than influenza. The temperature revived the pain and brought even more terrible suffocation. And yet I walked. To lie down meant death. Walk!
At the height of the flu I decided… to run. I had to run!
From that day I began to bring down the temperature. On the fourth day I was discharged (in my opinion, with great eagerness—why on earth did they need me there at all, and such a stubborn patient at that).
I could not climb into the ambulance bus and crawled into it on my knees. I got out the same way and returned home on my knees as well—this kept the pain from movement at a tolerable level.”

(Yury Vlasov, “The Price of Life”)

“Major illnesses are acquired as a result of mental and moral suffering. Physical exercise will not weaken them. It is important to eliminate the cause of psychological dissatisfaction. In extreme cases, one must at least understand the cause in order to protect the body from inevitable destruction, often tragic because of its irreversibility. A constrained mind is already a prerequisite for many diseases. Physical hygiene in this case somehow justifies itself only by acting as a distraction. All this must be understood in the interest of preserving health.”— Yury Vlasov, Justice of Strength

“Patriotism does not mean crawling on your knees before falsehood just because it is of domestic origin; it does not mean silent agreement with crimes committed in the name of one’s own country. The fatherland is truth. At the very least, it must be so.”
— Yuri Vlasov, The Great Redistribution.

— Yuri Vlasov, El gran reparto.

“I passed through myself hundreds of tons of the most intense loads. I showed no mercy to myself. I diligently filled in the calculation table.
After six months, my intestines began to digest food poorly, twisting into knots. This was clearly confirmed by an X-ray. Food caused excruciating pain. I was forced to go on the strictest diet. Then my liver and kidneys began to act up, my temperature started to fluctuate, and I lost sleep. A nervous spasm threw one system after another out of balance…
Only a few months separated me from the completion of the first stage of the experiment. I stubbornly continued to do my work.”

(Yuri Vlasov, Salty Joys)
No me daba ninguna indulgencia.

Finland.
Either we caught up with the bad weather, or it caught up with us. Rains and winds battered the still-bare trees and bushes, dotted with half-open buds. Young grass had only just begun to bind the watery ground left after the melting snow. This grass bristled in the chips and cracks of gray rocks that suddenly jutted out from behind trees or houses…
The world record in the clean and jerk had been set by me at the USSR Championship in Dnepropetrovsk and stood at 210.5 kilograms. In Paris I cleaned 212.5 kilograms to my chest. The jerk from the chest failed.
From Helsinki we flew without rest to Oulu. There, during the warm-up before going on stage, I showed a complete inability to make the maximal effort necessary to set a record. And the audience was waiting, demanding—there was not a single empty seat.
The coach forbade me to attempt the record weight. Nevertheless, we completed the clean and jerk program in full; it was impossible to disregard the spectators: on the one hand, to forget them, not take them into account, and on the other, simply to neglect them. People were waiting with excitement—and I could not pass by them indifferently.
What an abyss of curiosity, passion, and goodwill!
But one can also collapse into that very abyss—and never rise again. The platform seemed to me scorching and unstable. I was half-delirious.
An illness of the will was undermining the strength to resist, gradually washing away the desire to live. It seemed that someone enormous was blowing and blowing at the flame of my life… and was about to blow it out. I was still childishly foolish and very afraid of death.
Of course, not only foolish and not so much foolish: fear of death is also an excessive love for oneself. Now such a state in myself or in others вызывает disgust in me. It is unworthy of a human being…
But then physical exhaustion, sleep of only three or four hours, fatigue from constant travel, extreme nervous tension on the platform, and at night—alone with myself, the constant, unrelenting attention of the public and the press, painful and endless interviews, the absence of rest, and the necessity of complete outward self-control—the illness was rapidly shaking me…
I still had to step over myself…
Step over yourself, over love for yourself—and you will gain freedom.
The rays of insight illuminated me when my hair had already begun to turn gray, after long, long years…
But then, in that illness, I was changing my skin for the first time, and with it my whole self, the entire order of feelings and thoughts.

In my life I went through several such transformations—and each time I was born into the world anew, leaving my former self behind as something чужим and unnecessary to me…
(Yuri Vlasov, The Justice of Strength)

Finlandia.
