"The year of my first appearance at the World Championships was 1959.

After five years and six months of study, I defended my diploma thesis in February 1959. In the first days of March, I reported to the Petrovsky Palace, the headquarters of the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy, where I received my diploma and an assignment for 'further military service.'
On March 15, a Sunday, I won the Moscow International Prize Competition in the heavyweight category (I will speak only about athletes in this weight class). The Bulgarian Ivan Veselinov finished 67.5 kilograms behind me in the total of the three lifts. That same evening, Alexey Medvedev took the world record in the snatch away from the American David Ashman.
However, the record was destined to live for only 37 days.
On April 22, I won the title of Armed Forces Champion in Leningrad, competing for the Moscow Air Defense District. I set two world records—in the snatch and in the clean and jerk. In the total of the three lifts, I achieved the third-best result in the entire history of weightlifting.
I had been aiming at the snatch record for a long time. I first tested that weight in December 1958 at the USSR Team Championship in Gorky. I understood: the weight was mine; I still had reserves. But as for Anderson's famous record, I crushed it, one might say, in a burst of determination."

"With great enthusiasm, I read everything I could find about the Anderson–Selvetti rivalry. I did not even dare to dream of such strength, although among Moscow weightlifters I was already considered one of the leading athletes. I was trying to solve only one problem: how do people develop such strength? After all, both Selvetti and Anderson were practically my contemporaries, only three years older than I was.

I rejected enormous body weight as the principal reason for success. Could it really be all a matter of natural talent? That was not a sufficient explanation either... Skill?
The combination of all three factors is the path we are looking for. Body weight undoubtedly plays a role. Otherwise, athletes would not be divided into weight categories. But that weight must consist of muscle, of organized tissue.
Natural talent is essential; without it there are no victories in the highest level of competition. One can raise oneself to the ranks of the strong regardless of heredity. To become one of the very strongest, the foremost among the strong, requires outstanding physical qualities.
Victory is achieved through knowledge of the laws governing the development of strength. I did not yet understand this clearly, but I was already turning in the right direction."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

"I went to Tokyo with my first book — a collection of stories and essays entitled To Overcome Oneself. Natasha found the title for the collection in Emile Verhaeren's poem The Sword. Several years earlier, I had gone through a period of deep fascination with Verhaeren.

'The blood of your fathers and grandfathers will sour within you;
To become as strong as they were is not your destiny;
Without experiencing life, its sorrows and joys,
You will look through the window like an invalid...
Overcome yourself! If only you could...'
I had no illusions: the collection was undoubtedly an apprentice work, mediocre, even worse than mediocre, but this is an inevitable stage in becoming a writer. Yet how many records that first book cost me! And not only the book, but also the articles, essays, and reports. How they slowed my progress toward records and lowered the very ceiling of the records I might have achieved!
'He is free who is conscious of himself as living,' Tolstoy wrote in his diary on July 31, 1891. 'To be conscious of oneself as living means to be conscious of the law of one's life; it means striving to fulfill the law of one's life.'
The law of one's life. Awareness of one's path. Being destined for that path. Awareness of oneself. Why does a person become aware of himself?
Among other commandments, I remained firmly under the influence of a saying by Honoré Mirabeau (Count Hurricane):
'I have always believed, and will continue to believe, that indifference to injustice is betrayal and baseness...'
The readiness to pay any price, without hesitation, for the opportunity to follow the law of one's life. Devotion to this law stands above all instincts of self-preservation. This is not the gloomy narrowness of a fanatic; it is a bright faith in the righteousness of life in the name of all that is human.
There is no great or small task — there is only the fulfillment of the law of life. Service to this law makes every person interesting, necessary, important, adorns life, and strengthens the lives of all."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

'La sangre de tus padres y abuelos se agriará en tus venas;
No te está destinado llegar a ser tan fuerte como ellos;
¡Supérate a ti mismo!

"Once again, I was falling behind in my training. My body had been thrown out of balance by the upheavals of the spring and summer. Even ordinary training sessions disturbed my equilibrium. After almost every workout, I felt physically unwell. I waited for my health to recover, but it seemed in no hurry even to return to its usual level. The nervous breakdown had shaken me deeply...

I spent the end of December 1962 and almost three weeks of January of the new year in Cuba. The country was still living under the tension of the Caribbean Crisis; only a few months had passed since it. We arrived shortly after the government delegation headed by A. I. Mikoyan, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
I visited Hemingway's villa. The house had not yet acquired the polished appearance of a museum—it was still living the life of its owner. The openness of the objects, the lack of artificiality, and even the servants remained in their places.
To people such as Hemingway one may apply the words of Albert Einstein:
'The moral qualities of an outstanding person probably have greater significance for his generation and for the historical process than purely intellectual achievements. The latter themselves depend upon greatness of spirit, a greatness that usually remains unknown.'
(B. G. Kuznetsov, Einstein, Moscow, Academy of Sciences of the USSR Publishing House, 1962, p. 284).
I returned from Cuba once again exhausted and out of condition. The loss of routine, the absence of training, and another strain on my nerves (I delivered more than twenty lectures, and for me virtually every public appearance, even a simple interview, took place at heightened, if not maximum, nervous intensity) made it necessary to restore my strength immediately.
My rivals were not waiting, and for so long I had not only failed to move forward, but had not even been training properly. And as for the reasons why—no one cared. You must produce strength, or leave the game."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

"Psychological factors influence the behavior of the muscles. They respond not to the actual weight, but to an imagined one — the weight created by universal reverence and hypnosis. Every training session is not only the improvement of muscular strength, but also the scraping away of prejudices.

In reality, the energy contained within the muscles greatly exceeds its practical expression. Every training session is, above all, an education of the senses. In essence, athletes carry within their muscles greater results than they demonstrate through records."
(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

"Is it really so important merely to live? To walk, to breathe, to sleep... Would any of this be so wonderful if not for my feelings? And are not feelings awakened by thought?..

To always be in the life as you imagine it — that is life! And only for that should one take one's steps...
Here, now, everything is precious and understandable — which means it comes from me, is for me, and comes from truth. Everything loses itself without naturalness.
And people?.. And what is it that lies: reason or feelings?.."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Blue Eye", Moscow, July 13, 1989).
«¿Es tan importante simplemente vivir? Caminar, respirar, dormir...

"Throughout my life, any physical weakness has seemed to me unworthy. I have become accustomed to this (and it is the only way I build my relationship with life): my body serves me — it does not hinder me, it serves me. That is why I train myself with iron."
(Yuri Vlasov, "The Namesake", May 1989)

"The cultural impoverishment disguised as freedom and human rights is making itself felt more and more...
...Humanity will not escape this, for its primary concern is the material side of life and comfort. But soon only those whom the new arbiters of life consider necessary will remain. Hundreds of millions of people will be deemed superfluous in the technotronic society.
The weak must perish, and the weak will be all those whose means of subsistence are modest. This already includes more than half of humanity. Under the new conditions of existence, they will not survive. All will disappear unnoticed. Such is the humanism of the civilization of the future."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Great Redistribution").

"A dream inspires. It makes life beautiful and full of joys. But it also happens that the entire life of a boy, and later of an adult, narrows in dreams and thoughts to the size of a football field, and the person no longer notices anything else, and nothing matters to him except a hockey stick or a football.

Yet there is the wonderful world of nature, books, science, music, and theater. Can one really live without all of this?"
(Yuri Vlasov, "Our Ranks Have Grown")

"No, no, today is not the finish! My finish is eternal! Until my last breath! Away with rest! I cannot live otherwise. I do not know how to live otherwise. I do not want to live sluggishly, dully, blindly, and thoughtlessly!"

"I saw Zhabotinsky again ten years later. I had prepared my father's diaries, The Special Region of China, for publication.

Zhenya Penkovsky, with whom I had trained during my last years in sport, called me and said that Zhabotinsky wanted to meet with me. And so we met in front of the CSKA Hotel on Third Peschanaya Street. Greetings, meaningless questions. I was very tense and did not know how I would behave. But the feeling of hostility did not return. On the contrary, I understood his state of mind very well. He had been the strongest weightlifter, had undergone a serious operation, and had begun training again. But everything had changed. Alekseyev had already become the champion. And Zhabotinsky was overwhelmed by resentment...
I listened to him and caught myself wishing him victory. He was my comrade. He had carved out his path through grueling training and hardships. He had risen again when people had already written him off, and he had set an outstanding world record in the snatch. How those trials had changed him! It was him, and yet not him. I remembered him completely differently...
Later we met at my home. His voice filled the rooms. No one had ever spoken so loudly in my house. It was the voice of a man accustomed to the roar of the arena. He spoke about modern training methods, about his son, about his plans, about loneliness and failures, about the humiliating nature of that loneliness...
Again I found myself thinking about how difficult things were for him. The results of his rivals had moved far ahead, and age was already making itself felt. And I wished him only one thing—victory! Why? He was an athlete with whom I had competed. There was, as it were, a part of me in him—a part of my past. And I also wanted all those who were so quick to write off our past to be mistaken. I wanted that very much.
‘Are you still angry about Tokyo?’ Zhabotinsky suddenly asked me. ‘What can you do? It was a struggle. A struggle for first place, for the gold medal...’
I was taken aback and muttered something indistinctly. Zhabotinsky moved from the sofa to an armchair closer to me. The armchair sank almost to the floor and practically disappeared beneath him.
‘I'm happy for you,’ Zhabotinsky said. ‘The Special Region of China is an interesting book...’
And he began asking me about the book."

(Yuri Vlasov, "Where Do the Champions Go?").In the photograph: on the left — the cover of the book Where Do the Champions Go?; on the right — a photograph of Leonid Zhabotinsky and Yuri Vlasov.
«Volví a ver a Zhabotinski diez años después.

Me desconcerté y murmuré algo.

"After my defeat at the World Championship (an accidental, absurd defeat), I left sport, though of course not only because of that. I thought I would be able to earn my living through writing, even if at first it was merely piecework. And then I withered away. One must write what suits the prevailing taste, and then there are no difficulties.

I must have been born wrong, perhaps, because I cannot write that way. If I could, I would have made a living. Yes, that's exactly it. Murder without killing. There is the pen — take it and write.
In any case, to give up training now, when everyone has heard about my return, would mean acquiring the reputation of a coward as well. An additional joy, so to speak. Journalists call almost every training session: "When?" They mean competitions and records.
As far as everyone is concerned, I tied all these knots myself. True, I tightened those knots myself, but not because I had any love for knots.
It seems that I am at war with the whole world: with publishing houses that return my manuscripts, with the thrice-cursed highway, with the early twilight, with the snowdrifts, with the stove, with the oakum sticking out of the cracks, with the cold, with the deceitfulness of builders, with insomnia, made worse by my worries about my daughter. At night I jump up and check whether her blankets have slipped off. And then there are my ligaments and joints. My wife, having become quite skilled in the craft of a medical assistant, treats them with hot paraffin, bandages, and rubdowns.
In the mornings I do not want to open my eyes: once again there are worries, bustle, and anxieties.
I do not drink, yet I am tempted to buy bottles and disappear into drink: to forget everything, to lose my memory. Here I am needed by no one except my wife and daughter. And all this struggle, and its hidden meaning, are nonsense and absurdity. Everyone is indifferent, even if you bleed yourself dry.
I would like to lie down and not move.
Silently and desperately, I resist. Strength must take shape. It must.
I may breathe poisoned air, but that does not mean that I myself must become poisoned.
Yes, all these are merely brave words. The drum keeps beating, keeps beating."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Frost").
Y entonces me quedé seco.

Si pudiera, me habría ido bien.
Quisiera acostarme y no moverme.

"Every morning, through the haze of fatigue from training, I make my way toward the images of my characters. And after a while I become intoxicated with life once again. Through the pages of manuscripts, through the strikes upon the keys of the typewriter, life finds me. Never do I live as fully as I do during those hours.

For me, literature is an exact science. In it, the most valuable solutions are the shortest ones — the artistically shortest and emotionally shortest solutions. And I am obliged to solve this task while remaining faithful to my temperament, my vision of the world, and my upbringing."
(Yuri Vlasov, "Salty Joys")

Y estoy obligado a resolver esa tarea permaneciendo fiel a mi temperamento, a mi visión del mundo y a mi educación.»

"I am forced to discount speed and flexibility—age is taking those away from me. More than ever before, my results are beginning to depend solely on strength. But I cannot increase my strength through more powerful training sessions. Nor do I dare resort to an 'extreme' training method.

With age, the body copes less effectively with large training volumes and increased intensity. In general, as one approaches the age of forty, recovery time becomes considerably longer.
Without taking all these circumstances into account, my training would be doomed to failure. The loss of strength would become inevitable. Furthermore, with age, even relatively long breaks for rest become undesirable.
And yet, I still have a chance."

(Yuri Vlasov, "Salty Joys").

"In every city there is a press conference and an official reception, while I need only one thing — rest. Yes, and one final performance remains — in Hämeenlinna. For me, it is the final test: it will tell me who I am.

Even if I were alone all the time, I would find no peace. My inflamed mind torments me with the fever of excitement and with sleepless nights. I feel like taking my head and smashing it against something — then there would be peace, then there would be no memory, and therefore no pain; everything that torments me would dissolve and disappear.
I look around at this world — Lord, this world of healthy, well-fed, self-satisfied people...
And once again I switch my thoughts to the effort that lies ahead. I must gather myself, I must control every movement, I must wind my strength to its utmost limit, temper my will white-hot, draw myself taut — and all words of self-pity can come afterward...
Draw myself taut... Tighter still... As it is, I am already consuming not air, but burning coals..."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

Aunque estuviera completamente solo, no encontraría paz.

"Yet I could have overcome the fatigue — it was self-protection caused by the injury that distorted the movement. I consistently performed the most difficult part of the lift: I brought the record weight to my chest and rose from the deep squat. But I could not bring myself to drive it all the way to a secure lockout and fixation overhead. Pain, and the instinct for self-preservation multiplied by pain, distorted the movement. From one competition to the next I suppressed my fear. Gradually, I came closer and closer to the true execution of the lift.

If only I could outrun exhaustion! Fatigue was accumulating, after all. And the day had to come when the muscles would no longer obey.
A desperate race! Which would prevail first — fatigue, or me, having hunted down and defeated my fear for myself and my pain?
In Helsinki I was counting on a day of rest. But the tour schedule included a joint training session with Finnish weightlifters. Instead of resting, I demonstrated the warm-up, the press, the snatch, and once again the clean and jerk. Two hours of work, and then more words, words..."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").
