"Experience taught me not to trust results that have not been verified in official competitions. More often than not, they are greatly exaggerated, if not entirely mythical, or else achieved with unacceptable violations of the rules. In high-level sport, only a result officially confirmed under authoritative judging and in front of the public can be considered legitimate. Indeed, if the strength is real, what prevents one from demonstrating it officially? Why keep it hidden?

That alone is enough to arouse distrust. If you have the strength — prove it!"*
(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength")

"In Khabarovsk, I was forced to leave the TU-114 carrying the Olympic delegation because of a cerebral spasm. The aircraft departed on schedule; they did not wait for me. And where was I to go? Weakness, at times vomiting blood, and the ground itself seemed determined to knock me off my feet... I only hoped not to collapse.

In Khabarovsk it was already late autumn, with frost in the air. I was wearing a nylon raincoat and a light summer suit. I unpacked my bag and put on a woolen tracksuit with the white letters 'USSR' sewn onto it, then lay down on a bench to recover. The day was drawing to a close. An unfamiliar city. Some man noticed the letters beneath my coat and brought me a mug of very strong tea. Not tea, really, but chifir. I felt somewhat better and managed to get up and move away to a place where no one could see me. Pride would not allow me to appear weak in public.
But the man would not leave me alone. He helped me, carrying my bag, supporting me when I staggered, for I felt terribly ill. I looked at him only with gratitude. He was small, reaching only to my chin. At last I found a bench away from the airport building, among rows of tall poplars, where there was no one around. A freezing wind swept across the ground. I lay down on the bench. The man took out an old thin blanket, something like an army blanket, covered me with it, and sat beside me.
He was an unremarkable man, poorly shaved, carrying not a backpack but rather a worn-out cloth bag. I thought of the many people and of Vorobyov who had flown away aboard the TU-114. Soon they would arrive in Moscow, while at home my family would be worrying...
A mug of tea...
And I drifted off for an hour. The man did not leave. He watched over me...
If only I could meet him today! May fortune and good health never pass him by!...
I was in a truly miserable state then. Even in my sleep I felt nauseated and could not get enough air.
When I awoke, the man asked where I was going next. I said I needed to take a train; flying was not for me now. I removed the letters 'USSR' from my jacket and gave them to him.
'As a keepsake,' I told him.
He even offered me money for a taxi, but I refused. A taxi ride would finish me off. I was trembling all over, and not from the cold. The weakness was such that one push and I would fall.
We said goodbye. Somehow, I managed to walk away."

(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").
Solo esperaba no desplomarme.

"In my opinion, the words 'such is your fate' are false. Fate is a posthumous concept, a final reckoning. If you are capable of responding to life, then build it, shape it, turn it in the direction you choose. What does fate have to do with it? Even death in the pursuit of a goal is not proof of fate. How many times has it already turned into victory! Victory is the overcoming of fate, if by fate we mean the resistance of circumstances.

But the highest calculation of struggle is to attain one's goal, to surround it with reasoned and intelligent approaches, and to preserve one's dignity under any conditions. If you are alive, then all possibilities for proving your goal remain. As long as a person lives, nothing is too late."
(Yuri Vlasov, "The Justice of Strength").

“Photo of Yuri Vlasov in the magazine Soviet Warrior, No. 19, 1964.”

Translation of the text:
“On the eve of the XVIII Olympic Games, army athlete Yuri Petrovich Vlasov presented his country and Soviet sport with a remarkable gift. New world records have been entered into the world record tables in his name: in the press — 196 kg! in the snatch — 170.5 kg! and in the total of the three lifts — 580 kg!

It is characteristic that Vlasov himself does not consider this figure the limit. ‘The real records lie ahead,’ Yuri Petrovich asserts. ‘They are only just beginning, for only recently have athletes learned how to develop strength intelligently.’ And that means Soviet sportsmen will present their Motherland with more than one phenomenal achievement in weightlifting.”
