Hafthor Bjornsson just wrapped up his final heavy deadlift session before the upcoming Deadlift Championships on September 6th in Birmingham. The Mountain set a new gym personal best by pulling 460kg (1,014 lbs) for two reps on a standard deadlift bar—something he’s never done before.
Thor shared some behind-the-scenes details of his prep, including dealing with nagging scrapes on his legs, the importance of cleaning small wounds to avoid infections, and the fatigue that comes with pushing his body at this level. Despite being over 200kg in bodyweight and feeling worn down from a brutal training camp, he looked explosive and confident under the bar.
The first rep flew up so easily that he nearly lost track of time and blacked out mid-set, but he locked out both reps with authority. He admitted he’s far from fresh but emphasized that belief in himself and trust in his coaching team are what will carry him through.
From here, training shifts to strongman-specific movements like sandbags and power stairs, while deadlifts taper down. With only 15 days left, Thor is focused on smashing the world record goal of 510kg (1,124 lbs) and making a serious run at winning the entire competition.
He ended the session in classic Thor fashion: “400kg now feels like a light day.”
