In terms of all round phyiscal capabilities, strength, speed, athleticism, co-ordination etc? Skills sets do not come into play here.

This is in response to a face-palm inducing argument I have just had with Duality who seems to think that an NFL running back is the apex of human ability.

I was arguing in favour of gymnastics but after further though I believe that one of the martial arts may be the answer. Muay Thai or Jeet Kun Do for example, even MMA?

Your thoughts please...

you should copy and paste the debate from the chatbox. i would but i don't know how.

and don't call what i said a facepalm. i made a legitimate arguement for the NFL player as you did for the gymnast. respect from both sides or this will get messy.

Your arguing has driven me to distraction, cost me my birthday sleep-in and made me want to bash my brains out against a wall. It gets a facepalm, with all due respect.

Crossfit....... lol

There is no such thing as the supreme athlete. There are individual examples of guys who could be great at whatever they chose to do, but they still have to rack up their 10,000hrs of practice in order to be great. As soon as any skill or fitness category is ignored in favour of specialisation for an event/sport/activity you don't have the supreme athlete.

i agree with this, especially when saying that the triathlete is better than the running back or vice versa, different training, different strengths and weaknesses. it is my fascination with immense power and speed that gives me my preference of the NFL player over the triathlete, but that's not to say what the triathlete does isn't immensley difficult.

Although I agree, for the sake of argument I am just looking for the best athlete that can be produced. What sport hones your abilities to the greatest degree that you could be a supreme athlete.

And it can't be triathletes, that is an endurance based sport and does not focus on many other athletic qualities.

And this is why an NFL player is the wrong answer, you're focussing on only a select few aspects of an athlete. santaroll

I'm going with Tech and saying mma as well. You have to be amazing physically, mentally, and of course it takes tons of skill.

I don't think an NFL running back takes as much of the mental aspect, personally. It doesn't require as much variety in various skills either.

Goddammit! I said MMA first!

:p

And specifically I'd be looking at the lower weight classes where speed and endurance play a larger factor over pure brute force. Someone like George St Peirre maybe? Although Randy Couture in his heyday was pretty amazing.

now your starting to irritate me with your i'm right you're wrong bullshit on a subjective issue. as you told me last night, please remove your head from your ass and pay attention to the arguement. NO, i am not focusing on only two aspects, i am placing more emphasis on these aspects, but they are NOT my only reason for selecting the NFL player. coordination, ridiculous reflexes, the reaction time of a cat, and a swariming defense compiled of some of the fastest and strongest men on the planet coming at you ALL factor into the equation. couple that with the immense strength, speed, and power of the NFL player, and THAT is my reasoning for selecting them as the best of the best.

Well you said you had a fascination with immense speed and power so it was easy for me to make the assumption that this was why you chose a NFL player. No need to get cranky over it. But I still think that as athletes NFL players DO focus TOO MUCH on such things. :xmashsughdunno:

Meh.

Golf players have supreme reflexes, exceptional coordination, terrific strength (for light athletes), good endurance, great explosive speed and strength, and have to be mentally strong all day for days in a row.

I could list any other sport that most will never mention in a thread of this nature. People will be biased by what they perceive the ultimate athlete to be; whether that be fast, strong, able to take a punch, etc. The reality is most sports are mostly mental and part physical. If sports are viewed as a classic dominance of men, then you would have to go for strongmen athletes or wrestling. Fighting sports could enter this, but that isn't so much about dominating the opponent as it is about stopping them or hurting them.

...........good Lord........

good endurance? you mean the men who have a caddy carry their clubs around for them and have to walk a whole bunch? i'm not going to even touch on the "terrific strength" and "explosive speed". at least freako's arguement is a legitimate one for the gymnast and martial artist, this is just superflous hyperbole to the max.

a "sport" where you're never even out of breath deserves no mention in here

on a positive note, the rest of your post was very good.

I'm just going to say "pish-posh" and wave my hand dismissively. :p
