I came across this article from mensxp on the 1971 Olympia and it shed some light on facts I never knew. Apparently he was the only contender. Would he have won even if he wasn't the only contender? Here is a blurb from mensxp written by Anuj Tyagi:Arnold Schwarzenegger was the sole contender and thus the winner for Mr. Olympia 1971. Though the competition was supposed to be a showdown between 4 athletes which included Roy Callender, Franco Columbo, Sergio Oliva and Arnold, everyone except Arnold got disqualified before the competition. What happened was that Mr. Universe conducted by NABBA was taking place a week before Mr. Olympia. IFBB had made it clear that any athlete who participates or goes for guest posing in any other federation would be disqualified from its events. Though Arnold was the defending champion in both the events, he chose to skip Mr. Universe and went on to the stage of Mr Olympia. Sergio Oliva went on to Mr Universe stage and thus got disqualified while Franco and Roy met the similar fate as they competed in other Non IFBB recognized events. Thus it was a mere formality when Arnold came on to the stage of Mr Olympia in 1971 as he had already won the competition. However, to entertain the crowd at the event, Franco Columbo and Sergio olive were permitted to pose in spite of their disqualification. Here are some related pictures:
