Unless you've been living under a rock, you have all heard me remark on numerous occasions that 202 Mr. Olympia Kevin English is a huge massive dude who I swear weighs 260 in the off season and never carries KevinEnglishmuch body fat. How does a guy of this size squeeze into the Pro 202 Class? You want to talk about warrior dieting? Pfffff.... Kevin has taken his days of making weight for wrestling to a whole other level-- a level most of you can't even comprehend.
I train at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym in Syosset and I see Kevin in there every single morning. We talk all the time and on many occasions we have discussed this very dilemma -making weight. I always ask him why he just doesn't compete in the open class? 5th place in the Mr. Olympia (open) is worth more prize money than first place in the 202 Class. He would make a lot more money in the open! And he might even place better than fifth, so he'd really be taking home some bank! Kevin always insists that he wants to keep doing the 202. Perhaps he's been advised to do so? I don't know, but there has to be something really powerful - much more powerful than money - motivating such suffering.
How much suffering? Well, exactly one week out from the IFBB New York Pro, Kevin tipped the scales 227 pounds. He's so shredded at that weight that you can see his thoughts. And he has a week to lose 25 pounds! There's no fat on his body! So, where is that 25 pounds gonna come from? With a look so serious it could freeze brandy, Kevin told me that he'll definitely make it. Are you freak'n kidding me? I distinctly remember Ronnie Coleman saying, "This is body-building, isn't it?" If it's not for the money, I would love to know what is motivating Kevin to pare down to 202 when he expends so much effort in the off-season building on the other side of 250. Whatever it is, I am humbled by Kevin's determination to do it. This guy is a warrior's warrior!
I also asked Kevin what would happen if he didn't make weight? He said he would do the open. Either way - 202 or open, Kevin gets mad props for just being Kevin. No one has it as tough as he does for the next few days - no one!. Let's all get together and send some good energy Kevin's way for being Bodybuilding's Man of the Hour...
