Take a look at the man with a barbell on his shoulders. He has a scar beneath his heart. On a street in his hometown of Orsk, Anatoly Melnikov, a construction worker of the “Uralpromrekonstruktsiya” trust, courageously stood up to defend a passerby from drunken hooligans. A knife wound damaged the pericardium. Clinical death followed. Through extraordinary efforts, doctors brought Anatoly back from the brink.

When discharging him, they warned: “Do not climb stairs, use the elevator, do not lift heavy objects, do not run.”
Melnikov did not forget these warnings. But he could not live that way. Carefully, under medical supervision, he began returning to physical activity: walking, gymnastics, running, and finally weightlifting in an athletic training section. Today, the battle for his health has been won. He has two daughters, Tanya and Nastya.

“The Return of Nikolai Grishanov”
Last Saturday, the first official match in athleticism (bodybuilding) between the teams of the USSR and the USA took place at the Oktyabrsky Grand Concert Hall in Leningrad. The best result among our athletes was achieved by Nikolai Grishanov, who placed third.
“Life sometimes creates such plots that, if a documentary filmmaker captured them on film, no one would believe it—they would say it was invented. How could I have known, when heading to the restaurant of the Leningrad hotel ‘Rossiya,’ that I would become a witness to an almost anecdotal scene in the style of the unforgettable O. Henry? (It happened last summer, when I had been sent to Leningrad for the All-Union bodybuilding tournament.) I never made it to the restaurant—my path to dinner was blocked by a towering and intimidating headwaiter. The phrase ‘no vacant tables’ and his indifferent look left no hope.
At that moment, a young man approached the coveted door, wearing a worn gray sweater, with a tired—one might even say exhausted—face.
‘I’ve just arrived by train,’ he said to the guardian of the restaurant door. ‘I’d like to have something to eat…’
‘No seats,’ came the usual reply.
‘Maybe there are some options?’ the newcomer insisted.
‘Options?’ The headwaiter gave him an appraising look. Although the roomy sweater hid his physique, it was clear that nature had not deprived him of strength. ‘Let’s arm-wrestle. If you beat me—you’ll have dinner.’
The headwaiter was almost two heads taller and weighed at least fifty kilograms more. The opponents sat down at a table opposite each other, elbows on the surface, hands clasped like in a firm handshake.
‘Ready?’ the headwaiter asked mockingly. ‘Go!’
What followed was unexpected: a snap—and the giant’s arm was firmly pressed against the polished table.
‘I don’t get it!’ he exclaimed in surprise. ‘Again.’
A second—and once again the giant was defeated. Another try—and again his arm was pinned.
‘Let’s try with the left,’ the giant insisted.
They tried. The result was the same. The headwaiter’s surprise turned into admiration.
‘I’ve beaten everyone in Leningrad,’ he declared. ‘And now this… What’s your name? Poddubny? Hackenschmidt?..’
‘Grishanov.’
…I met Nikolai Grishanov for the second time at a training camp of the national team during preparations for the World Championship in Australia. Nikolai watched the training of the country’s best athletes with interest; when something was unclear, he asked questions. Sometimes he gave advice, and the athletes listened. Since I had never seen him among participants in bodybuilding competitions before, I asked the coach who he was. The answer was unexpected: ‘International Master of Sport.’ Nikolai Grishanov, a multiple champion and record-holder of Belarus, had been part of the national junior team. He competed in the under-100 kg category and achieved the standard of International Master of Sport. His best competition results were: snatch—180 kg, clean and jerk—220 kg.
‘I trained in weightlifting for ten years,’ Nikolai said. ‘From 1978 to 1983. I had good natural abilities, and success seemed to come one after another…’
As I understood from his story, his tragedy was neglect of one of the fundamental principles of strength training: while increasing explosive muscle power, he did not pay sufficient attention to strengthening ligaments and tendons. One day in training, while lifting a record weight, he suffered a severe injury—a rupture of the quadriceps ligament and detachment of the kneecap. Nikolai spent a year in the hospital. Four operations. A synthetic tendon was implanted, but there was almost no hope of recovery; amputation was even considered. Yielding to Nikolai’s persistent pleas, the doctors took the risk and canceled the amputation. Fortune smiled on the athlete: the crisis passed, and his health slowly returned. But a new problem arose—progressive muscle atrophy in the leg. Only physical exercise could stop the process. Lying in a hospital bed, Nikolai forced his muscles to work by sheer willpower. He kept a notebook in which he recorded the number of contractions: up to a million per day! He prevailed—the muscles began to recover. After discharge, Grishanov moved on crutches for half a year; the leg obeyed poorly. ‘The main thing is not to give up,’ he kept repeating. Several times a week he went to the sauna, where he warmed the synthetic tendon and, attaching a cable to his leg, bent it, working the muscles. The final victory came in 1985, when he returned to training and even competed again.
‘However, I then understood that I would never again reach the heights in weightlifting,’ Grishanov continued.
‘The coaches had already written off my sporting career. But I did not want to leave the beautiful world of sport. Of course, training under bodybuilding programs is much harder than in weightlifting, where only “pure strength” is needed,’ he explained. ‘Proper preparation for a bodybuilding contest requires excellent muscle definition. A balanced diet is also necessary, and it is not easy to maintain. But damn it! I have the knowledge gained from years in weightlifting, I have a great desire, and I have good physical data,’ he said, flexing his biceps. ‘Right now this is the biggest arm in the country—52 centimeters.’ And smiling openly, he added: ‘The elite of bodybuilding will have to make room for a former weightlifter…’
…Our third meeting took place at the All-Union bodybuilding tournament in Kaunas. He reached the final and, among eight contenders, fought for the title of absolute champion. He was driven by competitive passion. There was a certain intensity in his performance—perhaps accumulated during the time when he stood on the brink of disability. Grishanov took second place. Here in Leningrad, he participated in an international match for the first time… Immediately after the awards ceremony, I approached him and congratulated him. He kept repeating only one phrase: ‘I’m back, I’m back…’
He had returned—to the beautiful world of sport. It was not an easy return.

‘Me gustaría comer algo…’
‘No hay sitio’, fue la respuesta habitual.
‘¿Quizá haya alguna opción?’ insistió.
‘¿Opciones?’ Si me ganas, cenarás.’
¡Otra vez!’
Y otra vez perdió. Y otra vez.
‘Probemos con la izquierda’, insistió.
El resultado fue el mismo. Su sorpresa se convirtió en admiración.
‘He vencido a todos en Leningrado… ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Poddubny? ¿Hackenschmidt?’
‘Grishanov.’
A veces daba consejos.
Tras la premiación repetía: ‘He vuelto…’
Había regresado al mundo del deporte. Un regreso difícil.
Resultados:
Hombres: 1. Paul Jean-Guilame; 2. Troy Zuccolotto; 3. Nikolai Grishanov…
Mujeres: 1. Laura Baudry…
