Jay already had his whole life planned out; he had to work as a corrections officer for a maximum-security prison after acquiring his degree, but fate had other plans for him. Instead of working as a corrections officer, he was encouraged by his trainer, Marcos Rodriguez to go into bodybuilding.

He placed second in his debut competition in 1992 at the Gold's Gym Worcester Bodybuilding Championships event. It wasn't long before he became quite popular, even before he was Mr. Olympia.

After his debut competition, he had his first win at the 1993 Iron Bodies Invitational. As he continued to carve a name for himself in the bodybuilding space, he was often featured in videos relating to bodybuilding. He was featured in Battle for the Olympia 2001; the video was in the form of a documentary that featured different competitors preparing for the 2001 Mr. Olympia competition.

He went on to participate in other bigger events, such as the Arnold Classic. He contested and won the Arnold Classic title three consecutive times (2002,2003 and 2004).

There was a controversy during his career. Jay tested positive for banned diuretics at the 2001 Mr. Olympia event. However, he sued and he won the case. He was given back his second-place position at that event.

Moving on, he contested in Mr. Olympia and always placed second to Ronnie Coleman four times before he finally won the Mr. Olympia title in 2006. In 2007, he won the Mr. Olympia title again but he was defeated by Dexter Jackson fin 2008.

He took back the title in 2009 and defeated Phil Heath in the 2010 Mr Olympia, but Heath defeated him in the 2011 Mr. Olympia event. He however placed second in that event and in 2012, he couldn't contest the event because of his biceps injury. In 2013, he contested again in the Mr. Olympia event but he placed a respectable sixth position.

Aside from Mr. Olympia and the Iron Pro Invitational, Jay Cutler has won many other titles, like the IFBB Night of Champions in 2000 among others.

For every competition that Jay contests in, he never fails to bring to the stage a well-built body and a balanced physique. Now, Jay Cutler retired from Bodybuilding in 2013 after winning the Mr. Olympia title four times.
