They're different sports. Overall, rugby is probably "tougher", but that doesn't mean that the rugby athletes are tougher than the american football athletes. I would bet every penny that no rugby player is anywhere near the specimen that Mario Williams is, for example.

good post. i agree. especially with the notion that rugby athletes aren't nearly of the athletic caliber of the NFL. but you'd have to be blind to say rugby players aren't tough as nails. rugby is more brutal, but NFL atheletes pwn all in ability

NFL players are specialised athletes so I while I agree that each athlete will have elite capabilities for a singular action I wouldn't go as far as saying that they pwn all in ability. Rugby players are at least closer to all-round athletes, but of course there is a difference between forwards and backs as well.

I agree to a degree, NFL IS a specialized position sport a 330 lineman will never last more than 20-30minutes in a rugby game but in the same arguement he would destroy and possibly permanently damage a rugby player who went on the line with him.

Becuase he specializes in exherting maximum force from a stopped position, in order to break the opposing line.

Where you compare a rugby player to a passing QB..... well the QB would die without his O line.

Yeah, maybe the O-line and D-line players. Most other tight ends, running backs, wide receivers, etc are 10x better athletes than rugby players.

Eh, different games again. Could a wide receiver or RB be as effective keeping moving for the whole game? Maybe, who knows. Would a wide receiver be able to tackle people?

I'm sorry but this is bullshit. santawhat

You have one guy that actually passes the ball, you have one guy who kicks it, you have a bunch of guys whose job is to stand still......... NFL is not superior to rugby or AFL, it is just different.

Just in the news this week one of AFL players was offered a position in a rugby team. Now this guy would have to add mass and learn the game, but a pro athlete that is offered a change in footy codes shows that even coaches can recognise that good athletes are good athletes.

Oh and I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of NFL recruiting guys looking for AFL guys to come over and be kickers once they have retired from AFL. Something about NFL guys not being able to kick a ball.:xmashsughdunno:

The precision of which is more demanding in the NFL than the aforementioned sports. I'm not really even trying to make a case here for American football, it's just a silly comparison over all, especially when reduced to such simplistic levels.

NRL players are hard, tough bastards. NFL players are pansies in comparison.
Only protection NRL players use is a mouth guard. Rugby League is also a much more interesting game to watch cos of all the "hit-ups" they do, and its a fast-paced sport.
**IMO**

No that would be the predator mode post. :xmaskekegay:

Anyway, I would expect a Queenslander to not understand a fast moving game like AFL. Your brains can't work that quick. :xmasrofl:

Shut your face, dont use that word anymore, please. thank you..

Yeah, they just stand still. Are you dumb? Being a lineman is extremely physically demanding. You'd be surprised how fast some of them can move. Sure not as fast as some of those rugby players, but for being 300+ pounds its pretty damn impressive.

I'll take Robbie Gould over any rugby player as a kicker.

Line and Oloz: Watch a game of AFL then watch a game of NFL. Then talk to me about precision passes and movement and speed. And Oloz, I am not dumb.

I'm not particularly concerned about any code. I don't enjoy any rugby code, love AFL, enjoy NFL and think soccer is :xmaskekegay: The fact is you can't compare any code with another for skill or speed or toughness.

It takes a lot more to get hit while wearing no padding. But adding padding does mean players are more likely to hit as they are less likely to hurt themselves. The lesser running and consecutive game time allows NFL players to be bigger. Plus look at AFL where you don't have guys running straight at one another unlike the rugby and NFL codes. The hits will be different.
