There may be only one Mr. Olympia, but there is - for now - at least two Olympia shows on the IFBB Pro League calendar. This coming weekend in Dortmund, Germany, at the Mr. Olympia Europe, 11 men will vie for the top spot in a competition that will be scrutinized greatly for what may be the landscape of things to come.
Does this mean that the Olympia will branch out the same way that the Arnold Classic has? A show in every continent across the globe?
How this one in Germany fares may go a long way in how the promoters and the IFBB approach the possibility of the O branching out. So it behooved everyone involved to put together a kick ass pro line-up in what is usually known as the Amateur Olympia. There are amateur categories, strongman and professional men's open bodybuilding - the headliner, of course.
The last two Olympia runners up - Dexter Jackson and Shawn Rhoden, respectively, in 2015 and 2016 - will be there. That in itself is a coup for the IFBB. These are two veteran bodybuilders who have become very impressive top-three competitors with the absence of Kai Greene on bodybuilding's biggest stage (since 2013). And Jackson is former Mr. Olympia winner, earning the Sandow in 2008.
But the quality is far from over, with up-and-comer William Bonac also on board. He placed fifth in Las Vegas and could have easily fared better. Bonac has been on a steady incline the past few years and a victory here can be a springboard for his entire career. '
Other prominent names are Roelly Winklaar, Cedric McMillan and Lionel Beyeke. All three have had some great moments but also some disappointing ones, as well. This could be a good spot for all three to place well.
All of the aforementioned are fan favorites and there are no hometown competitors, either. So it will be a tight and interesting show that may end up being a litmus test for the potential Olympia series.
