Fred Chadwick, former bodybuilder and proprietor of FY Gym, experienced a seizure and stroke while on vacation in Calella, Spain, with his girlfriend Kathleen Byrne.

Fred was celebrating his 12-year relationship with Kathleen, which had been put on hold due to the epidemic.

Despite the fact that he had no underlying medical conditions, the 66-year-old was put in an induced coma at Barcelona Hospital after experiencing a seizure.

After two weeks in a coma, the father of two was transported back to the UK on an air ambulance to be resuscitated closer to home.

However, physicians determined that the brain damage he had sustained was too serious, and he died on Saturday, October 1.

With a fitness-obsessed family, Fred established FY Gym on Forth Street in the 1980s.

Following in the footsteps of his father, he was crowned 'Mr Wigan' in 1984 and 'Mr Britain' in the 1988 English Federation of Body Building and Fitness Championships, when his sister also won a title.

Fred earned the 80kg championship at the same tournament as famed bodybuilder Dorian Yates won the 90kg and above title, which he described as the "proudest moment of his life."

After running FY Gym for four decades, Fred went on to teach hundreds of individuals in the community and was hired as a weight coach by the Leigh Centurions in the 1990s.

He eventually acquired a passion for golf, winning the South Lancashire Golf League four years in a row with Leigh Golf Club in the 2010s.

Kathleen described her lover as follows: "Fred was a lively and kind individual.

"Fitness was an important part of his life, and he was always patient with individuals at the gym, no matter what their goals were.

"He was a wonderful guy."
