“It is impossible to simply rest before competitions. The ability to bring oneself out of heavy training loads is an art—a rare art that still does not lend itself to precise calculation. Strength favors high-volume training. At the same time, speed in dynamic exercises suffers greatly from such volume. And there are many other mutually exclusive demands that I had not even been aware of. As a result, I would step onto the platform overloaded with fatigue.

I did not know how to combine tapering before competitions with training on heavy weights. I did not know when to come out of high-volume training, when and at what level to begin intensive training, how to maintain strength during intensive training, or, in general, how to transition from volume to intensity—and whether other options even existed. Now I will be able to bring my strength together with mathematical precision at the exact moment of my performance.
I have only identified some patterns. The real work lies ahead. But I know how and what to do. I know the direction of the search.”

(Yuri Vlasov, “Salty Joys”)

Solo he identificado algunas regularidades. El verdadero trabajo está por delante. Pero sé cómo y qué hacer. Sé la dirección de la búsqueda».

“The tour—how delighted I was by this proposal from the French and Finnish weightlifting federations! By that time, the illness had already eaten into me like a rash. The coach assured me that I would get some rest during the tour. To perform in Paris, Lyon, Tampere, Oulu, Helsinki! So many impressions! And we would just play around with the barbell—that was all.

This ‘relaxation’ turned into demanding trial lifts in every city. An extra day of rest meant additional expenses for the organizers—no one agreed to that. Advertising and posters left me with no way out. Everywhere they expected only a record, demanded a record, paid for a record. I owed everything to everyone: to reporters—answers to any questions, to the public—records, to the cameras—smiles, to the organizers—ticket sales. In general, the program could have been handled without incident. But only if you were completely healthy and if other lifters were competing alongside you—that was the whole difficulty. And I deceived myself. And I did not fully understand that what interested people was not me, but my records. In elite sport, fatigue is not taken into account. Nothing is taken into account except victory.”
(Yuri Vlasov, “Salty Joys”)

Yo me engañé a mí mismo.

“In those training sessions, I came to know physical exhaustion. But I did not realize that crude muscular work drains the nervous system. I boldly stepped into a world of fatigue and pain. And what was I risking, after all? Nothing more than fatigue…

I methodically searched for new data for training. I tried loads, tried again… I had to test everything on myself—and experience betrayed me! I found myself in a world of entirely new dimensions, while continuing to measure everything by old standards. That was the whole problem: I applied old notions to something new. Fatigue raged within me. Severe nervous exhaustion shook me. An illness without fever, without swelling, wounds, or fractures—only a growing inner pain.”
(Yuri Vlasov, “Salty Joys”)

“In the hotel room, I switch on the desk lamp and begin unpacking my suitcase. I don’t feel like sleeping, and I have nowhere to hurry. I lay out bandages, ampoules of glucose, liniments, and painkillers on the table.

At the bottom of the suitcase lie copies of Life, Paris Match, Stern, posters, French and Finnish newspapers with reports about my performances—a whole pile of papers promising to feed the public with records. I am powerless against such publicity. I never promise anything myself. It is always better to keep silent, even when you are in good shape.
But this is a tour! Every other day there are performances with record weights. I work alone. No one backs me up. The pauses between attempts are negligible. Will the audience wait? A half-hour warm-up before the snatch, another half-hour before the clean and jerk—and I would be booed. I am forced to perform without warm-ups. If I get injured, I will ruin my training or even lose the sport altogether. And with such weights, in my condition, and without warm-ups, getting injured is all too easy.
I spread the posters across the floor. How well-fed I look there—self-satisfied, smooth…”

(Yuri Vlasov, “Salty Joys”)
No tengo sueño y no tengo prisa.

Frente a esa publicidad soy impotente. Yo nunca prometo nada.
Trabajo solo. Nadie me respalda.

“Yes, yes, the main thing must be changed—one’s attitude to life, one’s view of misfortunes, hardships, and everything in general! When I understood this, a feverish joy seized me. I had found it! This was what I had been searching for! It no longer mattered what illness I had. This response was universal. It would lead my body out of the dead end.

In those days, I rethought all the ideas that had shaken me so deeply in the summer of 1977. Now it was no longer a desperate blaze, but a definite way of conduct—my place in life and a corresponding attitude toward all undertakings and setbacks, and nothing else. Strength of will, courage in behavior—all this filled me with an extraordinary joy, so long forgotten that during those weeks I felt as if I were in a delirium. I shuddered at the thought of my former vulnerability, the senselessness of my actions, my weakness… From now on, everything is different!
From now on, any misfortune, any breakdowns, failures—these are objects of work, and nothing else. There is no hopelessness—there is always a way out!
From the first weeks of this new state, I began to recover. No, the illness retained its inertia, and all its manifestations still made themselves clearly felt, but their force diminished with each passing month.”

(Yuri Vlasov, “A Confluence of Complex Circumstances”)

“Once again I pushed the training loads, but this time out of necessity. Not yet recovered from exhaustion, I was already working myself back into exhaustion. I had to back up my team—the national team—in its contest with the Americans. How painfully I trained! I had forgotten strength, lost endurance. Flabby, awkward, sullen…

No one must see my condition. Hold on. With Shemansky’s challenge ahead, retreat was out of the question. Insomnia weighed me down. Now I was learning to control myself under conditions of nervous exhaustion, to act within a new dimension of sensations. There was no other way. In a handful of workouts, I had to awaken my strength. In time, in time…
It was absurd to speak of athletic form. I had to manage to put at least something back into my muscles. At any cost, to get rid of that flabbiness…
Of course, I could not display my true strength from the winter training, but I hoped to maintain an advantage in results. At my best, I was unreachable. Even if I was poor now, my edge in strength still kept me ahead and had to save me…
During those weeks, I experienced a relapse of the loss of willpower—a rebellion of a constantly overstrained nervous system. My body responded with revolt to the new, abrupt increase in loads, but the situation demanded overcoming any feelings and any fatigue.
I returned to the gym in the first days of August. That meant five to seven weeks until the World Championship. A depressingly short time. But I could not leave the team exposed.
The coach wrote down the required load figures—all of them excessive for my current condition, yet without pushing through them it would be impossible to compete. If Bogdasarov hadn’t written them down, I would have done it myself.”

(Yuri Vlasov, “The Justice of Strength”)

No había otra salida. A tiempo, a tiempo…

“Having accepted the impossibility of competing in the championship, though not completely ruling out participation, I reduced my training during the final weeks. In Vienna I limited myself to warm-ups (about the team’s performance — in my book To Overcome Oneself. It also contains detailed accounts of the World Championships of 1959, 1961, and 1962).

Like all the participants, we stayed at the ‘Youth Hotel’ — Jugendgästehaus — on Schlossberggasse 8. It was in Vienna’s 13th district, Hütteldorf-Hacking. The hotel was surrounded by lawns, and beyond them stretched a park almost to the foot of Mount Hagenberg. Lying on the grass was a pleasure — no one chased you away or cursed your parents. And the days teased with beautiful weather!.. ‘Build’ strength, remember your form, follow the prescriptions of strength — ah, if only one could forget it all!..
The hazy sky radiated heat, as though it were not autumn sun at all. Yet dusk already came earlier and earlier: the evenings were long and lingering.
For several days I lived together with Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov, but the duties of the president of the USSR Weightlifting Federation were far too demanding, and I moved to a house near the hotel. The hotel itself was completely full because of the championship, even the rooms with double-tier wall bunks were occupied. Still, I did not regret it — the hotel was crowded and noisy.”

(Yuri Vlasov, “The Justice of Strength”)

“All of it came from a greedy curiosity about Petrov-Vodkin. This movement toward painting of meaning. This subordination of nature to the direction of thought. This unity in the new revelation of the world through music, painting, and literature. This sensing of a phenomenon long before its realization, this turn toward the new amid the triumph of tradition. At first, the unconventional nature of the new disturbed me, even offended me. Then it awakened curiosity. I did not understand or feel the new; I was simply fascinated by deciphering it. And then the new and all the old — all traditions — merged into one. Suddenly I saw the inseparability of development. And then I eagerly began to read all the meanings of the new. In it, symbolism and meaning prevail over mere depiction. Not in every master, of course…

All of this coexists with an attachment to the Impressionists, the old masters, and classical art in general. Only now have I understood that one does not exclude the other. And this is by no means indiscriminate taste. Everything in art is unified and inseparable. One development flows into another, reflecting not only changes in life, but also its richness, its great diversity. And suddenly I saw it as diverse. Diverse within beauty. In beauty there is this development, overturning the principle of singularity and uniformity, denying any final completeness…”

“How dangerous praise is for a writer. How important it is to preserve one’s own voice within oneself. How easy it is to lose it. Awards and fame are a trap for a writer. Then he is no longer an artist. To please others, to remain on the crest of the wave — these concerns increasingly take hold of his imagination, directing his творчество toward degeneration. Servility replaces his essential qualities and opens the road before him.”
(Yuri Vlasov, “The Justice of Strength”).
