If someone was looking to pick out a guitar to learn on their own (let's say this person is me) what would you suggest? Some el-cheapo walmart jobbie so I can get my "picking" down? Or is there a good brand that you would recommend starting with? I get bored at night so I'm looking at expanding my mind (without any drugs). ;-)

Well i always recommend people get a cheap guitar at the start purely becuase you dont know how you're gonna like it. You dont wana go out and buy a $1000+ guitar just to find out you hate it. So yeah, buy a cheap guitar (dont just buy any piece of shit guitar though, there are cheap good guitars and cheap shit guitars), see how you go, work on your technique, have some fun with it, and see how you go, id say, after about 6 months, if you're playing/practicing solidly, by all means go out and buy a guitar you like/want. :tiphat:

Nice thread.

I've been playing guitar for about 16 yrs. (Not so much lately cos of time constraints).

managed to get into a repsected popular music course which had young guitarists of the year as students along with me so felt pretty good to have got in - there were only a few on the course.

Been in a few bands (not since I moved though) and did demos with pretty decent producers who had worked with well known artists. And we played the MTV building a couple of times in London and got interviewed for a late night entertainment programme.

Just play for pleasure now when I can although I miss being in a band, playing live and being in the studio.

My set up is pretty scaled back now with a Gibson Epiphone with twin humbucker and single coil pickup setup, a didtech effects pedal, Marshall valvestate 2 x 12" amp, and I have a couple of acoustics and a digital multitracker to lay down tracks at home when I can.

Favourite guitarists:

1. Steve Vai
2. Joe Satriani
3. Yngwie Malmsteen

nice one rocky!! nice to see another muso in here! What kinda stuff didyou/do you play? Id imagine after 16 years you would have amassed a shiteload of experience in the studio and stuff.

Ive never been in a stable band... so not too much gigging or studio work for me :(

Just downloaded some David Lee Roth albums, man they sucked. Steve Vai, Jason Becker, DLR, such a waste of talent.

I've seen all of those lists before and they're all extremely flawed and everyone knows it. Just look at the "top guitarists" and you'll know that. I thought Braaq was going to use that as his argument for Hammett being a top guitarist, since he's listed 11th. Rolling Stones should be shot for making something so contraversal and idiotic.

Would be very hard to make my own top 100 list, but it would probably go something like this.

1.) Steve Vai
2.) Eric Clapton
3.) Jason Becker
4.) Jimmi Hendrix
5.) Joe Satriani
6.) Paul Gilbert
7.) Marty Friedman
8.) Eric Johnson
9.) Paul Petrucci
10.) Buckethead

Magazine lists suck balls.

Jimi always ends up number one and I agree that Cobain has no business in there.
