Thanks! That's the kinda stuff I'm talking about. And when you say "learn on your own" you mean with a book or something to show me how to hold my fingers and such? Thanks again for the help. I might have to find myself a guitar!

Anything and everything mate, books and internet. If you can score a few lessons with an experienced teacher, id take it up. Any tutoring from an experienced person is a good thing. Youve gotta watch out though... a lot of stuff is just plain bullshit. Go find a few sources about all that stuff.. and make your own decision up on which ones th ebest for you. If you find something you arent sure about post it up on here! But yeah, all i can say is just practice every day. Pick your guitar up and practice every day, whether its 10 minutes or 10 hours... just do it every day :xyxthumbs: dont over exert yourself at the start, you want it to be fun, so yeah, those things i said before, that should keep you up to speed for a bit!

good luck mate :hsughr:

I don't see anything wrong with Dime's solo's, although sometimes he may use the whammy bar at strange times. My top 5 is not necessarily who I think are the five best, but here it is.

1. Buckethead (have about 25 of his albums)
2. Paul Gilbert
3. Steve Vai
4. Dimebag
5. Joe Satriani

background? I just listen to it.

Buckethead!:hsughr:

No... it is not just my opinion. EVERY guitarist ive met that has experience... that can play metallica songs/solos, that has a decent knowledge of theory and technique has agreed with me.

Well he made #11 on Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarist list.... :e5dunno:
Maybe you just know so much more than the experts??? :49:

one question.. HOW IN LIVING FUCK did kurt cobain make the top 20 greatest guitarists?? ahead of people like santana... and jeff beck... and Mark Knopfler. Seriously. rolling stone has its head up its arse.

another thing... HOW IN LIVING FUCK did kurt cobain make ANY of these lists in the first place?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Does it not occur to you that guitar solos is not the only way of making these lists? For instance, Kirk Hammet, lead guitar player of one of the most influential and most popular bands of our time. Or Kurt Cobain started a whole new genre of music and transformed Rock from the glam rock of the 80's to grunge that swept the nation. Being the best at playing guitar is not what makes you a top guitarist on these lists.
Open your mind and stop being so closed minded. You have a real problem with that, not a good quality to have bud :dunnodude:

Kurt Cobain doesnt have any skill when it comes to guitar. He was a songwriter. He wasnt influential because he played guitar... he was influential because of the songs he wrote. THATS why he has no place being on that list. The lists are made to appeal to the masses of 'John dough apparent music buff'. :xyxthumbs: they are page fillers. They are the guitarists the general public will relate to. Its not how good they are on the actual fucking instrument.

People wouldnt really keep reading the lists/buying the magazine for the lists if they put the 'more obscure' guitar geniuses on there... Ever heard of Wes Montgomery?? where is he on that list?? he is one of the most brilliant guitarists of the last 100 years. Andres Segovia (father of modern guitar). John Williams??? Think about these things before you reply with tripe like that.

I can't believe Paul Gilbert ever formed Mr. Big, such a waste of Gilbert's talent.

Skeptic, you seem pretty knowlageble on guitars so i was wondering if you could help a brother out. i recently heard of a whammy bar technique called "dive bombing" but havnt heard/found out anything else on it. can you break it down for me?

basically its used to change the pitch of a string, much like bending, only using a lever at the bridge. With a standard tremolo... on most fenders, you can lower the pitch to some pretty low pitches... like you said 'divebomb' ;) Floating bridges (generally referred to as a Floyd rose, even though there are other companies that make them), you can change the pitch up and down... like how joe satriani's pinch harmonics have that squealing sound... Dimebag does the same thing. :xyxthumbs:

Tell me what yall think, but Nick Hipa of As I Lay Dying is an amazing guitarist and definitely makes my top list..
Here is The Sound of Truth Video, a great example of his abilities:
