Funny Games (2008) - (9/10)
Spike Lee, despite constantly running his mouth off, is an intelligent man and a gifted filmmaker but there's a fine line between courage and bravado and he tends to cross it regularly and without apology. Do the Right Thing is a very good film, tackling race relations while incorporating all demos involved in such a small, given community but I still feel it is far from achieving masterpiece status. As for the Oscars in question, I'm a bit indifferent about the Best Supporting Actor category that year and would have been fine had it brought home gold there. However, as far as Best Original Screenplay is concerned both Crimes & Misdemeanors and Sex, Lies, & Videotape reign far supreme. Perhaps they don't embark on conquering topics as culturally significant as that of Do the Right Thing but they are still incredibly realized efforts in their own regard and I outrightly prefer them to Spike Lee's picture.Line:
Since we tapped into this on the other thread I didnt want to keep hijacking the thread but I was curious about a movie. In my film class we watched Do The Right Thing and my teacher was in love with the movie. I thought it was very good but was curious what you thought of it considering many people thought it deserved the 2 oscars it was nominated for.
