and you didn't address the basketball jumpshot comparison and the golfer thing i wrote. do you see how a jumpshot is similar to a golf swing in that neither requires athletic ability, but that is only one facet of the sport for basketball?

It is only one part of basketball, sure. But I completely disagree that it doesn't require athleticism to be able to do it, which is why i didnt respond to it.

i'm digressing on my stance on baseball especially after what line explained to me about it. the ability to throw a baseball 90mph is impressive and my stance on it was more or less an uneducated one. but unless you have some enlightening statement or arguement for golf i'm not seeing nor agreeing with your stance on it.

How about the ability to perform a complex movement in a second, hit the ball consistently 300 yards, and do it accurately to a small target?

dude your not saying anthing new here. and having played high school basketball (varsity) i can tell you the jump shooting practice is the least challenging and demanding part of the sport and just takes practice, not athletic ability. i mean just the fact that someone in as piss poor physical shape as john daly can be a top pro just makes it all the more clear that golfers are not athletes. i think in my mind an athlete should be someone elite in their ability to physically perform, and your definition is not as such.


based on your arguement horseshoe players, marksmen, archers, dart board players, and billiards players should all be considered athletes. i'm just not seeing eye to eye with you on this.

again true. but your comparing the sport and its athletes only within the confines of the game itself (the PGA) and not against other sports (you only use other sports as examples), where it falls very short in the quality of its athletes as compared to the other sports leagues.

Not really because the criteria for your thoughts on what a quality athlete have more to do with physical capacity versus accomplishment in sport.

but could the same not have been said for bobby fischer in chess? not to the quite the same extent as woods but he was so dominating the competition at such a young age that competitors could not keep up and this indirectly does make your peers in the "sport" better.

Throughout this whole conversation you were doing fine until here. Degrading the athletic precision necessary in golf is completely different than what's required of a champion chess player.

So why shouldn't he or Garry Kasparov (perhaps the greates chess player of all time) be included on the list? however the matter being that neither chess nor golf requires any athletic ability whatsoever despite it being a skilled and thinking man's game.

that's why we see men in their 50's, 60's and 70's still busting out the drivers. though what they do is hard and requires intense concentration and practice, neither are athletes.

first john daly has never been a top pro, and is really a joke for golfers.

the golf swing is much more complicated than the jump shot. you have 13 clubs you have to swing, and hit them perfect everytime you hit the ball or your screwed. plus being able to angle shots, use spin, putting, chipping. if you dont play golf i guess you cant appreciate the ability the pros actually have.

a golfer posses none of the highlighted traits. i'm sure someone will say otherwise though.
