I'd recommend Shortbus to any film lover with an open mind as far as 2006 films go.

I was reading about that the other day.

I bet you just got it for the scene where the guy fellates himself you dirty boy.

Watched Jackass 2, Hot Fuzz and The Return last night.

Jackass 2 - exactly what you expect.

Hot Fuzz - funny, not as consistent as Shaun of the Dead and a touch too long but still good.

The Return - only 82 mins but still felt too long. A whole lot of nothing really.

Just watched 'Harsh Times' - really disappointed. I've liked all the Christian Bale films I've seen but this was a definate mis-step.
His character was like Ali G and him and Rodriguez were talking and acting like Jay and Silent Bob - but playing it straight. Was totally distracting and then the rapid descent into madness which was never fully realised and seemed to be suddenly there with a couple of choice "heavy shit" scenes to hammer it home all to bring on the inevitable downer climax, just none of it seemed to ring true. Poor.

I saw Shrek 3 last night and have to say it sucked balls.

Just saw Evan Almighty. Pretty good; it's obviously not meant to be a thinker, so it stands up fine. They should've posed some more difficult questions but whatever. It was decently funny.

Evan was way nicer in this film than he was in Bruce Almighty, though. That was weird. And Jim Carrey should've had a cameo at the end as his reporter character from Bruce Almighty.

Just saw 1408 tonight. I actually had to come home and write up some thoughts, I knew I liked it, but I didn't know how much i liked it. John Cusack plays the part very well, and keeps the audience alive with the "excitement" between him and the room, it kind of pulls you in too the situation. It did get a little slow at one point, but eventually picked back up pretty quickly. Very good story and genuine.

^ I seen the trailer for that and whilst it looked good you can never tell with Stephen King adaptations whether it'll turn out like a Misery or Shining, or like 96% of his adaps! Glad it's good though - I'll look forward to seeing that.

The Protector(Tom Yun Goong) with Tony Jaa is one of the best martial arts movies i've ever seen.

Spiderman 3 is lame. ***** dies, and i liked ***

Pirates 3 was very good. a little bit of a letdown, but Keith Richards made it better.

Tenacious D pick of destiny is good, funny. The Devil rocks my world.

Bandidas was really good...and you seen Penelope's magoomba's in one scene

I'm gonna hire Hot Fuzz and Epic Movie when they come out.

I saw Live Free or Die Hard last night. It was a great film. Very genuine, no CGI bullshit. There was very little computer graphics and a whole lot of blowing up shit and actual "old school" action. I recommend it to everyone.

I'm bored so here's what I've seen recently, though work has severely hindered my viewing of films as of late.

Ocean's 13 - Director Steven Soderbergh is the modern day epitome of doing experimental films that he wants to do for himself than doing a grandiose spectacle to entertain the masses. Sadly, with Ocean's 13 he was not able to apply any lessons learned from his '06 ventures Bubble and The Good German which leaves the style of this film complicatedly messy and unfocused. While it maintains to hold the audiences interests the third installment of the Ocean's series really reaches for ideas and has conviences and contrivances that were absent from the first, distracting us from some of the enjoyment that was to be had. There were some good performances (Pacino's gifts were focused and realized for the first time since Angels in America, just not to that extent) but in the end this is just a stylistically confused heist flick. **1/2 (out of ****)


Hostel: Part II - A friend of mine said it best: Hostel: Part II is the only sequel I've seen that has completely swapped it's strengths and weaknesses with its predecessor. Here we have more character development and an overall sense of fear and dread for our three female leads who are, of course, being set up for something horrible. Meanwhile, we're given an interesting perspective into the business side of the entire torture-porn business and it was an interesting and somewhat enlightening touch to see both sides developed and come head on. However, the ending lacked the faux-Hitchcockian touch of suspense and actually to be frank, the entire third act was pretty poorly handled. It's almost astonishing to dissect Roth's work as he's capable of some brilliantly tonal moments while haphazardly throwing together others. This was actually close to being a good film but it's shifted ending makes it come up short. **1/2 (out of ****)

La Doublure (The Valet) - A fairly simple tale of a French businessman who tries to decieve his wife and the public of his ongoing affair with a renowned supermodel. Doing so requires he convince a young, pining valet to take the model in and convince the public they are indeed a couple while he hammers out the paperwork necessary for a divorce. Made in the same vein as 1940's American screwball comedies, La Doublure features a witty script and sharp delivery and watches, similarly to Woody Allen's 2006 effort Scoop, as a warm little break from a fairly dreadfull season. *** (out of ****)


A Mighty Heart - This psuedo true life story of the 2002 kidnapping of American Journalist Dan Pearl and the resulting investigation left me a bit underwhelmed. While clustered with some powerful moments the more interesting elements of the story are carelessly countered with flashbacks which attempt to introduce us to Pearl and, more importantly, his relationship with his wife (Angelia Jolie); a strategy better suited for an earlier, more developmental stage of the film. We're not given much information on Pearl and what we are seems to be generic slices of life so it's trying to really feel the strain for he and his loved ones during his entrapment. Meanwhile, the screenplay makes mention of 11 other Palestinians who were captured during the course of the Pearl search and we're forced to ponder why, outside of international image, his family is privee having the government at his disposal while miscelaneous, nameless others suffer similar fates yet our feelings are never purported to lie with them. Truly it is a sad event and a well acted story but the inconsistent emotional reachings and subpar cinematography leave something to be desired. Still worth seeing in a summer full of over-the-top blockbusters but unworthy of any high praises. **1/2 (out of ****)

Paul, you just proved you suck at reviewing movies even more so. Very little computer graphics?

I also saw Die Hard last night as well.

Started off slow and cheesy ( I thought the entire movie was going to be full of over actors and cheesiness actually) then it warmed up.
The guy that does the Apple Computers commercials did better then I thought, but still not great.
Bruce Willis's did the usual, but had a bunch of people that didn't know how to act in it. All seemed they were trying to hard and probably should go take a few more acting classes.

Overal, its the 2ndd best Die Hard I've seen after the 1st one.

On a scale of 10, I give it a 4.5.
