About the mats:
We actually came up with the exact same suggestion. The solution seemed clear, but then the weight slamming was not the issue anymore. Now he was talking about not having the weights under control, and putting the other gym users in "great" danger. I mean wtf, in my opinion you have pretty good control when you do 12 strict reps.
He has also forbidden the T-bar-row. Why? Because it's a dangerous exercise for the people around us.
Every time we're coming up with suggestions which can make our training better, he changes his reasons and makes up new problems.
For instance: Some time ago we asked if he could bring up some heavier dumbells. That was undoable because the others who wern't as strong as us could get injured. Then we asked if we could buy the dumbells and bring them up when we needed them and take them back to the basement when we were done. NO CHANCE!
It almost seems like he don't want us to progress
