Finally watched Slumdog Millionaire.

I borrowed this off my brother a couple of months ago and finally watched it this evening. Probably one of the best films I've seen in the past couple of years. Thoroughly enjoyed the film, even though it dealt with a pretty despondant situation (although ultimately uplifting).

To all the Slumdog haters: Line was right, he usually is.

I'd say a 7/10.

I didn't mind that too too much, as it was largely a fairy tale, though a fairy tale set in a contemporary society. My problem was that the movie did a fair job in presenting and reflecting this society and its problems but ultimately sided heavily with fate and chance versus academia and cognition. That, and the narrative is essentially a giant gimmick, though one that's not unsuccessful.

That and too many dutch angles, though the cinematography was apt as a whole, especially in evoking light and space where there's none to be found.

The entire "it is written" idea didn't sit well with me. These two brothers had dragged themselves up by being enterprising. It was clear they were also smart and able to pick things up as they went along (the scenes in the call centre hinted at this). It hinted that they were educating themselves and this was the reason for Jamil's success (but this education was patchy). But then to essentially have a few lines that said he got some lucky questions and that it was all fate flew in the face of this.

I liked the "Millionaire" narrative with the explanation of each question. It sat as an interesting juxtaposition between the abject poverty of the contestant and the blatant commercialism and consumerist westernisation that was driving the "better half".

I've just watched a really crappy film. The In Laws. Michael Douglas at his worst. Thank god I had the computer on to do something other than watch all of it.
